Mariners & Yankees . Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero

Postby SpecialFNK » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:44 pm

According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Mariners are close to a trade for a "young impact hitter."
No word on which team they are talking to, but Crasnick was told that it is a "significant trade" and that closer Brandon League is not part of the return package. The Mariners finished dead last in the majors last season with 556 runs scored and haven't made any major additions to their offense this winter.

@JonHeymanCBS
montero is traded for pineda

@JonHeymanCBS
trade involves more players than that tho. @StoneLarry suggested it first

EDIT:
mlbtraderumors.com
6:51pm: The deal is Pineda and Jose Campos for Montero and Hector Noesi, a source tells MLB.com's Greg Johns (Twitter link).

word on twitter is that it could be a deal involving Michael Pineda to the Yankees for Jesus Montero.

most know the offensive potential of Jesus Montero.
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/ ... us-Montero

does going to Seattle effect his offensive potential?

Michael Pineda minors.
http://thebaseballcube.com/players/prof ... ael-Pineda

Pineda overall in 2011..
9-10/ 3.74 ERA/ 1.10 WHIP.
splits??
home- 2.92 ERA/ 1.01 WHIP
away- 4.40 ERA/ 1.17 WHIP

does his home/away splits effect anything?

thoughts on this trade?

I'm guessing Montero will play catcher for Seattle?

Pineda gives the Yankees good starting rotation?
Sabathia/Nova/Pineda/Hughes/Burnett ? or is Freddy Garcia in there over Burnett?

Leaving aside my thoughts as a real baseball fan (and fan of the Mariners), I own Pineda and Montero in a dynasty league and would hate it if this trade happened. Montero would be moving from one of the best, if not the best offense-boosting environments (great park to hit in, great offense around him) to one of the worst. Same is true in reverse for Pineda. He'd get better run support as a Yankee, but a lot of his flaws would be magnified there. He reminds me a little of Rafael Soriano in that he's primarily a fastball/slider guy and works up in the zone a lot.

As a fan of the M's, I'm still reacting to this possible move; it's probably a good thing though.

As a fantasy baseball owner of both these players, hate it hate it hate it.

I'd be amazed if the Yankees didn't give up significantly more than just Montero to land Pineda.

Full deal per Heyman on Twitter is Montero and Hector Noesi for Pineda and Jose Campos.

I feel like I have so many thoughts going through my head.

the Yankees offense can afford to lose Montero.
I would assume now the Yankees will have to do something else to fill their DH spot. not hard, still many DH type players left as a free agents.

I've read for awhile now the Montero projects more as a DH (or other) going forward and not catcher. now the Mariners could use Montero at DH with Smoak at 1B, and OF of Ichiro/Gutierrez/Carp.
OR does Montero play catcher instead of Olivo?

I don't remember the specifics. but back when the Mariners had Cliff Lee, the Yankees would not trade Montero for Lee. but that was for Lee with only 1 year remaining on contract right? Pineda only has 1 year of experience and will only turn 23 on the 18th of this month.

One of the top pitching prospects in baseball with a stellar rookie season as a 22 year old in return for... a DH prospect. Nice deal Seattle, enjoy your permanent place in the basement.

regardless of where Montero will play, the guy can hit.
Pineda is one of the best pitching prospects, but Montero is one of the best hitting prospects.
