Last week, I revealed five quality sleepers at catcher for the 2012 season. It’s time to do the same for the first base position. The top of the 1B ranks are locked in, and owners in leagues that don’t have a Corner Infielder position probably don’t have much use for this article. However, I’ll still [...]
The only area where Mets might be considered useful
Billy Butler too well thought of to be considered on the high end of being a 'sleeper'?? Most people I know avoid him due to his lack of power, but he belted 13 HR and 57 RBI after the All-Star break last season and he's never going to hurt your average. I think this could be the year he surpasses 25 HR and drives in 100 with 80 Runs. If you're passing on the early run of elite 1B, this is a guy worth targeting, and a safer bet than a guy like Lance Berkman, IMO.
Also, with everybody all caught up in Hosmermania, a forgotten man (by many, though not as much around here) at 1B is Paul Goldschmidt. 8 HR, 4 SB, 26 RBI, 28 R in just over 150 AB last season. The .250 average isn't sexy, but the guy did bat .317 in almost 1,200 minor league at bats. He's got the 1B job in Arizona locked up and should bat right in the heart of the order (5 hole?).
Good calls on both. I think Butler doesn't provide quite enough value to be considered a sleeper -- he's generally one of the first guys off the board at the position after the elite tier peters out (right around the Howard level). Then again, if someone can get him significantly cheaper than the buzzworthy Hosmer or Berkman, it's a nice pickup.
On Goldschmidt, the plan was initially to include him, but he wound up being ranked 13th or 14th in the ADP of early mocks on MDC. Like him as a sleeper; don't like him that early.
Anyone keeping an eye on James Loney? 2nd half numbers where nice. .320 Avg/ .534 Slg/ .914 OPS. HR's were still low, only 8 in the 2nd half . Someone to watch.

James Loney is more a player you get stuck with than a player you want, he has no upside. We all know he's going to hit 10 homers, drive in 70-80 rums and hit around .280. He's not a terrine player by any means but theres not much to anticipate.
