Keepers are coming due at the end of the month. This year, we have a 4-round prospect/minor league draft followed by a 3-round major league draft. As it currently stands, I have the third pick in both after finishing 18th last year. Of the two, the prospect draft is by far the most significant, as I have the third overall pick, guaranteeing me one of Bauer, Darvish, and Rendon.

With this said, I need to start my preparations and that means identifying my 22 keepers and preparing for the minor and major league drafts. As I am clearly in rebuilding mode, I am looking to retain as much upside and potential as possible, even if it means sacrificing a starting position in the process.

I have some flexibility on my roster, as I can demote Garrett Richards, Wade Miley, Fautino de Los Santos, and Rex Brothers to my farm as they are all under 50 IP. However, I have a feeling my issue is more so filling out my 22 MLB keepers than my 15 man farm club.

Could you please identify the 22 players you would keep on my farm? Would you demote any of my farm-eligible players to give me an extra keeper? Would you try to make any trades to upgrade at a position/category?

Thank you in advance for your help!

That list looks good. Only thing I'd change is Danny Duff over Paul Maholm.

Three thoughts on the proposed:
  • Allen over LaPorta (LaPorta's progression was likely slowed by his hip surgery and ankle issues, but my gut tells me Allen's upside trumps that of LaPorta's)
  • Duffy over Schafer (has control over CF job in HOU, but upside is limited IMO)
  • de Los Santos over Reimold (should at least platoon LF in BAL, but has yet to

I could always demote Richards, de Los Santos or Brothers to the farm to add another keeper, if necessary. Anyways, I like the majority of your list, but wanted to share my thoughts on the above.

Do you get to draft until you fill up your minor league roster? For instance if you promoted Turner and Rizzo, would you get to draft 2 extra players? If so i would promote those two and let Reimold and LaPorta go. I would think you would be better off with more minor league picks as that is where you are going to need talent. Maybe you have to live with Rizzo and Turner on your bench because they aren't in the majors yet but know you have two extra minor league players who could become something.

These are the 22 I would keep.

This list is more reflective of the keepers I was leaning towards, with one exception. I would probably drop LaPorta and keep Suzuki. Catchers in a 20 team league can be valuable, and even with KS coming off two down seasons, he has to be better than the options in the major league draft pool.

Regarding draft format, we have a 4-round prospect draft followed by a 3-round major league draft. I have 4 picks in the major league draft (3 first rounders and a third), so there might be some value to come from that. We cannot pick prospects until our farm is full (I already have 14 spots filled out of 15 as is), but a 4-round draft should certainly help to fill in any weaknesses or gaps.

I see your point on the C and I have no problems with it. There are few C out there and you could do worse than Suzuki.

I would strongly consider promoting Rizzo and Turner to give you those extra two picks in the draft. Odds are you will have to call them up this year anyway so you might as well do it early and have a couple extra players that might help you down the road.
