Marlins only have to pay 2.5 Million so it could be lighting in a bottle and that price is great for a 4th starter. That said I think he will be a bust and will be the next Carlos Silva signing a minor league deal next year. If Freddy Garcia had to do it going into 2011 what is to say Zambrano won't going into 2013.
Cubs got hosed! I thought the Cubs could have gotten a better player, and would have had to pay less. Cubs get Chris Volstad and the Marlins only pay $2.5 MIL of Zambrano's $18 MIL 2012 salary. Volstad, ouch. he had nice numbers in his rookie season of 2008, but since then, bad. I figured the Cubs would trade Zambrano, but thought they would get some type of prospect even if it was a low grade prospect. what good is Volstad?

the guy walked off the team last year. he didn't want to be there, the cubs didn't want him there, and other teams knew that. i'm sure the cubs were quite happy to save the $2.5MM they could just to get him out of there.
Zambrano had to go, but the Cubs still could have got something for the future. they are full in rebuild mode. getting Volstad does nothing. even a D grade prospect in the low minors without much upside but has some hope of potential would have been better than Volstad. especially with the Cubs covering so much of the remaining salary.

Zambrano has no value and there's a chance that Volstad has a better season this year. the Cubs had to move on and this was the best offer. And not a terrible one imo. Somebody has to be pitch and Volstad could be an average starter for 3 years.
I don't think any team in their right mind would give up TOO much to get Zambrano, being the head case he is. I mean, he quit on his team in the middle of a game. What team would want a guy like that? Low risk/high reward deal for Florida and the Cubs just jumped at the chance to unload a cancer.

He was $18M of dead weight, they're lucky they even got Volstad in return. He's nothing spectacular, but definitely provides value at such a low salary. They're about equal in talent at this point but you get three years of Volstad for about what Miami is paying for one year of Zambrano. The Cubs should be happy with the return (if ever you can be happy about an $18M sunk cost). I wouldn't have been surprised if they had paid $16M just to get rid of him without even getting anything more than minor league depth in return.
based on what Volstad has done for the last 3 seasons, he sucks. 2011- 4.89 ERA/ 1.42 WHIP/ 2010- 4.58 ERA/ 1.41 WHIP/ 2009- 5.21 ERA/ 1.43 WHIP/
even if Zambrano HAD TO GO, the Cubs would have been better off getting someone to help for their future. even if it was for player to be named later or future considerations, that would have been better than Volstad. even completely releasing him could have been better because they could have used the roster spot on someone else. the Cubs are paying Zambrano $15.5 MIL of Zambrano's remaining $18 MIL 2012 salary. if they were willing to pay that much, they might as well have paid it all if it helped get back some prospect. Volstad is nothing but a back of the rotation innings eater. even if they can control him for 3 seasons, that is what he is. (based on the previous 3 seasons).
