Because the Red Sox are really hamstrung by that massive payroll of theirs. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go out and give Madson basically the same contract.

this Miami situation is interesting. they want big name big free agents. Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols fit that. BUT they already have Hanely Ramirez at SS and Gaby Sanchez at 1B. Sanchez is nothing great, so he wouldn't stand in the way of Miami wanting Pujols. imagine they would then trade Sanchez to fill other NEEDS. I don't know what Florida's attendance was like in this season and back. they move into a new ballpark for 2012. what is attendance expected to be like? just because it's a new ball park, are they expecting big crowds? maybe that's why they want big names. seems like a big risk though. Miami also has an offer out to Buehrle.
usually teams who get new parks get the big names in order to draw attendance, not the other way around. They want to fill the stadium and get as much revenue from ticket sales as possible.

were the Marlins similar to the Rays as far as getting real low attendance? I've read that the Rays even with making the playoffs the last 2 seasons have not had really good attendance. I wondered if there was also a similar problem with the Marlins also being in the state of Florida. if the Marlins end up spending big bucks and fans don't want to come out, isn't there a big risk they could lose big money?

Yes. But they played in a terrible baseball stadium and received almost no revenue. But I find this spending a welcome surprise. Perhaps they can become a popular event in Miami because there is money to be spent there.

It looks like Bard has the job now. The GM was on the radio the other day saying he no longer was going to give Bard a chance to be a SP. This leads me to believe that the Sox will bring in some veteran non-closer RP and give Bard a shot at the job.
And it wasn't because the Sox were hamstrung. I don't see how any team can justify spending so much money on a RP for such a long contract. Even for a closer as good as Papelbon. RP are too volatile. Better to spend their money elsewhere.
1-Albert Pujols, 1B: Cardinals - Hard to convince a fan base that a guy who has won 2 and played in 3 WS is not worth the money. 2-Prince Fielder, 1B: Texas - Sounds unlikely now but I have been calling it all year so might as well stick by it. Plus love to see that power in that stadium. 3-Jose Reyes, SS: Marlins - They seem pretty determined to get a big name and I think they might pay more than anyone else. 4-C.J. Wilson, SP: Yankees - Pretty desperate to get a SP 5-Jonathan Papelbon, RP: Already signed 6-Jimmy Rollins, SS: Brewers - They could use a SS but I think they don't get what they think they are getting 7-Roy Oswalt, SP: Texas - I think they want another SP 8-Heath Bell, RP: Padres 9-David Ortiz, DH: Red Sox - I don't think either one wants to leave this relationship 10-Aramis Ramirez, 3B: Cubs 11-Edwin Jackson, SP: Cardinals - After trading Rasmus, I think they need to keep something in that deal. 12-Michael Cuddyer, 1B/OF: Twins 13-Mark Buehrle, SP: Cardinals 14-Carlos Beltran, OF: Marlins - Again they want some big names 15-Ryan Madson, RP: Phillies - Dart throw here so might as well go with past team 16-Hiroki Kuroda, SP: Dodgers 17-Francisco Rodriguez, RP: Toronto 18-Erik Bedard, SP: Red Sox 19-Carlos Pena, 1B: Marlins 20-Grady Sizemore, OF: Indians (I think they give him another chance) Yu Darvish, SP: Yankees

I think the chances are higher that they are going to try to repeat the old Marlins blueprint of loading up for one season then selling everything off and trying to restock the farm system. I'm still fairly skeptical that Miami really cares that much about baseball.
1- Albert Pujols, 1B: Stays with the Cardinals 2- Prince Fielder, 1B: Goes to the Blue Jays 3- Jose Reyes, SS: I actually believe the Marlins will land Reyes, but not the other star player names floating around 4- C.J. Wilson, SP: The Yankees need a SP or two badly and CJ tops the list of FA SP 5- Jonathan Papelbon, RP: Signed with PHI 6- Jimmy Rollins, SS: Remains in PHI 7- Roy Oswalt, SP: San Diego - Short term deal in a good pitchers park to boost his value for 2013/2014 8- Heath Bell, RP: Stays in San Diego 9- David Ortiz, DH: Signs with the Yankees 10- Aramis Ramirez, 3B: Red Sox - Moves Youkilis to DH to help keep him healthy and gives BOS a good backup bat at 1B/3B 11- Edwin Jackson, SP: Stays with the Cardinals 12- Michael Cuddyer, 1B/OF: Red Sox - Looks like a great fit for what Boston needs (another right handed OF/1B) 13- Mark Buehrle, SP: Signs with the Red Sox 14- Carlos Beltran, OF: Stays in San Francisco 15- Ryan Madson, RP: Signs with Toronto to put an end to their closer carousel 16- Hiroki Kuroda, SP: Stays with the Dodgers 17- Francisco Rodriguez, RP: Fits in well with the Marlins 18- Erik Bedard, SP: No idea here! If he is smart, he'll go to the NL West. I'll say Arizona 19- Carlos Pena, 1B: Brewers 20- Grady Sizemore, OF: Stays with the Indians 21- Yu Darvish, SP: New York Yankees
