My Other Keeper League... WHIR

Postby MrAccoe » Mon Sep 26, 2011 5:52 pm

Posted earlier about a different league... currently in the finals of this league and looking towards next year as well.

12 team, H2H League. 6 Keepers

Cano (1st)
Cabrera (1st)
Kemp (1st)
Cliff Lee (2nd)
Verlander (4th)

Of course I can't give up 3 1st round picks so these 5 would take my first 5 rounds. My last keeper is between Ichiro (6th - probably not), Michael Young (6th - maybe), CJ Wilson (15th - most likely). Any thoughts? Or should I go with my gut and keep CJ Wilson?

Forgot to add Jeter (6th) but most likely won't be keeping him either unless someone comes up with a very compelling argument.

I would go with C.J. Wilson, he has great value in the 15th round.

Mr. Accoe,

I think in terms of absolute value, Young is slightly more valuable for CJ given that he plays a skill position and is so durable. But given that the cost of keeping CJ is so low, he is, IMO, the best choice.

2b Cano (1st)
1b Cabrera (1st)
3b Mike Young (6th)
OF Kemp (1st)
SP Verlander (4th)
SP CJ Wilson (15th)

This set reps your best value and keeps IMO. Verlander as a 4th is much better value than Lee in the 2nd.

That's interesting, I never considered not keeping Cliff Lee this year. Although he counts as a 2nd rounder. In real terms, he's really only going to cost me a 4th or 5th.

Cabrera (1st)
Cano (2nd)
Kemp (3rd)
Verlander (4th)
Lee (5th)

Verlander and Lee could be flip flopped but it doesn't matter in our league. The rule is that you keep the guy one round ahead of where he was drafted the previous year... if you have multiple guys in the same round, they just cost you a round below. After trading for Cano as a 1st round pick, he's going to cost me a 2nd round pick next year to keep. Kemp was drafted in the 2nd round this year, but with my 1st and 2nd round picks already being used, he's "only" going to cost me a 3rd round pick next year.

So it was between Michael Young (6th) or CJ Wilson (15th) for me. Unless you think I should keep Young (6th) and not Lee, that would give me an extra 5th round pick... but can I find a better player than Cliff Lee in the 5th round?

Definitely keep Lee, and my last keeper would be CJ Wilson

Thanks for all the advice so far. Still comes down to Young vs Wilson at this point. I'll have to see what happens in the off-season. I'm kind of against keeping 3 pitchers in a 6 keeper league but the fact that Wilson is only a 15th rounder is very, very enticing. But losing Young is also going to hurt. I guess the biggest question is whether I can find a replacement for Young or be able to re-draft him.
