Crawford vs Victorino as a keeper

Postby acapulco » Sun Sep 18, 2011 8:59 am

Ordinarily Carl Crawford would be an automatic keeper, but he's not doing much better post all star game than he did in the first half. Does anyone know why he is hitting 50 pts lower than he usually does, stealing less than 1/2 of the bases he usually does, and not even fielding to his usual standards? Is there any reason to think that the "real" Crawford will show up next season?

I'm tempted to keep Shane Victorino as my 5th keeper rather than Crawford (14 team pts league). Am I crazy?

So no one has any thoughts about Victorino vs Crawford as a keeper?

Crawford, no doubt about it. I would expect him to have a much better season next year after having played a full year with the Red Sox.

So Crawford has 1/3 the stolen bases he usually does because of adjusting to Boston? And this gold glove outfielder is fielding like an average outfielder at best because of adjusting to Boston? Gotta be something else. I'm a Sox fan and I'm baffled.

I'd expect Crawford to bounce back significantly next season so he gets my vote.

I don't think it's such a crazy comparison. What does everyone expect Crawford to "bounce back" to next season? 50 steals? I've got news for you- he's now in his 30's and speed is the first thing to decline. You hope his average goes back up to the .300 range, but that's only about 20 points over Victorino. Aside from that, the two profile remarkably similarly.

That said, I think you're more likely to be able to redraft Victorino than Crawford based on name value alone, which means Crawford is probably your guy.

this. I think this year was just an aberration and he will return to being a big time player in that potent lineup next year. I believe you have an easy decision to make.

I agree with this thought process. I'm a sox homer and hoping for a nice rebound next year. Everything coming out of Crawford the past few weeks though sounds like he is just a defeated man. He doesn't have any pep. The other somewhat alarming thought is the decline in his SB attempts over the past three years. He's not getting on base this year, so that has to explain part of the decline, but regardless it has been a pretty drastic decline.

All that said, I'm keeping Crawford over Victorino.
