Did anyone other than maybe the Giants GM expect anything out of Zito?
well his agent, but its not the point. I can't think of a bigger non injury bust than Zito. Maybe that Japanese Mets kid that died his hair blonde, but he wasn't paid nearly as much as Zito
With .163 Average, Adam Dunn No Longer Considered A Baseball Player
August 12, 2011 |
CHICAGO—After his batting average slumped to a historically low .163 this week, White Sox DH Adam Dunn received an official notice from Major League Baseball Thursday informing him that he no longer met the minimum requirements to be labeled an official baseball player. "He's certainly allowed to continue playing baseball, but he cannot legally refer to himself as a 'baseball player,'" an MLB spokesperson said in a statement, adding that Dunn would now be called what the league refers to as a ‘baseball participant.’ “We are confident Adam will eventually regain his abilities. For now, however, we think it's best to disassociate his horrible hitting from the great game of baseball." When asked for comment, Dunn expressed relief and claimed that joining the ranks of players like Mike Cameron and Jorge Posada would at least take some pressure off of him.

I don't think the point is necessarily the size of the contract, more so the expectation that people had for the player. If it is just contract size compared to production then guys like Schmidt and Pavano would both beat out Zito in terms of production vs pay. Hell Zito pitched more innings in his first season as a Giant (at basically league average) than either of those did over the life of their contract (at well below league average).

I think the point is everyone who knows anything about baseball knew Zito was terribly overpaid. I personally am the biggest Zito fan you will ever find and I even thought he was overpaid because of the declining K rate, the back-to-back-to-back 200+ IP seasons and the age factor.
Crawford's expectations were a LOT different from fans and most people on this board than those for Zito. Zito was also never drafted in the 1st round.
(As a side note, Zito needs to regain some stuff to get to 200 wins. Chance at HoF with 200 W's, 1 Cy Young and 1 Ring?! )
Sean Tracey has my apologies, we all know Ozzie Guillen is an idiot. I'm rooting for you!
I am actually playing JD Martinez in front of him. My 16-team H2H league where we activate 3 OF and 1 UT sees Crawford practically inactive all season. Freddie Freeman supplanted Crawdaaddy a long time ago. Martinez has since I traded Alex Gordon.
Its very sad to see my #1 pick drying up like this. I couldn't give him away at the deadline.
My Friendliness bar...recently shrunk from 11.3 to 10mm long!!

I traded Choo for Crawford early in the season. Crawford starting hitting well again and got a few sb's going. He then went on the DL and right when he got back I traded Crawford/Shields for Stanton/Hamels. So Crawford has worked out great for me in my dynasty league .
