Felipe Paulino - starting to realize his talent?

Postby J35J » Mon Aug 08, 2011 9:11 am

I keep waiting for him to show his true colors but his command(2.66BB/9) has really done a 180 and his stuff is just as electric as it has always been. Not going to get you many wins but could be a nice piece to spot start down the stretch and during the playoffs.

3.41 FIP
3.43 xFIP
8.60 K/9

Fun little article on him here. :-)

Paulino has been on a lot of people's radars for a couple of years now and he just never put it together whether it was due to an inflated BABIP, an erratic BB/9, or some really crazy HR rates. Kauffman Stadium will definitely help the HR rate and the BABIP will typically take care of itself. The walks are the part that has me worried about somewhat of a regression, but at worst I think he should be a guy heading into next year as a #3 type starter. Some of the comparables to his statline in the league right now can make Royalfan's mouth water considering he was basically a waiver wire type pickup for GMDM.

Paulino - 46.6% GB - 8.59 K/9 - 2.66 BB/9
Sabathia - 46.7% GB - 8.28 K/9 - 2.27 BB/9
W. Rodriguez - 44.8% GB - 7.72 K/9 - 2.91 BB/9
Bumgarner - 45.8% - 8.07 K/9 - 2.08 BB/9
Shields - 44.5% GB - 8.53 K/9 - 2.42 BB/9
Gallardo - 43.5% GB - 7.83 K/9 - 2.83 BB/9

Loved the addition off waivers by the Royals. Loved it more after I watched his first start with them, and love it yet more now. He's really cut back on the walks a ton. The biggest concern Royals fans should have is that his high slider usage eats his elbow alive. Otherwise, a sneaky good fantasy option at the moment with further upside IMO.

Possible step back or just a bad outing against Tampa yesterday?

I think the walks are more troubling then the lack of strikeouts.

I think it's hard to say after the one outing...you'll get a better sense his next outing. He has thrown alot of pitches his last half dozen or more starts though. We'll see.
