Which 5 would you keep? WHIR

Postby twistedude » Thu Jul 14, 2011 12:07 pm

I know it's a little early to be thinking about keepers, but my team is dominating my league (ahead by 20+ pts) and it's fun to plan for the future. The league is a 14 team roto keeper, 5x5. We keep 5 players based on the rounds they were drafted in the previous season.

Below is my roster. The players that are in consideration for keepers are listed in bold with their draft round values bracketed next to them. Several players are locks already (ie. Bautista) but I'd be interested in seeing which others would make your list.

Which 5 would you keep?

C: Ramos
1B: Votto (3)
2B: Kinsler
3B: Bautista (21)
SS: Asdrubal (15)
IF: Hosmer (24)
LF: Pierre
CF: CarGo (4)
RF: Boesch
UTIL: Snider
BN: Bay, Jennings

SP: Verlander (7), Kershaw (8), Bumgarner, Zito, E Santana, Dempster, Carrasco
RP: Papelbon, D. Hernandez, Isringhausen
DL: Putz

Overall it looks great, but I'd be interested in knowing what rounds you got the following players in:

Jennings
Snider
Bumgarner

Depending on how they close out the year, it might be a better idea to keep one of these 3 over Cabrera. I don't know how I feel about Cabrera sustaining what he's done in the first half over a full year or a career.
(In reference to an Aaron Hill for David Price swap)

Thanks for your reply. I have 7 players bolded....and need to narrow it down to 5. I'm definitely not keeping Jennings (24), Bumgarner (7), or Snider (24) over any of those 7, so their round values are almost irrelevant.

Need to narrow this list of 7 players down to 5:

Votto (3)
CarGo (4)
Verlander (7)
Kershaw (8)
Asdrubal (15)
Bautista (21)
Hosmer (24)

You've got some really great values there, which means you'll face a tough decision when the time comes to select keepers. My five, at this point, would be:

Votto
CarGo
Verlander
Kershaw
Bautista

Hosmer in the 24th is really tough to throw back with his potential, and I could see him jumping into your top five (or at least giving you a lot of pause when choosing) if he has a nice second half. However, at this point, I just can't bring myself to throw back any of the five listed above since they're all really good values.

I know what you mean about Hosmer. That's one of the main dilemmas I'm facing. Hosmer @ 24th round value vs. Votto @ 3rd round value. If Votto continues to underwhelm in the power department, and Hosmer has a strong second half, I could see myself keeping Hosmer instead. It would almost be like keeping Hosmer + a 3rd round pick instead of Votto.

The other dilemma I'm facing is Kershaw (9) vs. Asdrubal (15). Kershaw is more proven, but Asdrubal plays a far scarcer position and has amazing value in the 15th round. Plus I'm already keeping a SP in Verlander.

ideas?

If I had to decide right now I'd roll with Votto CarGo Kershaw Bautista and Hosmer. By the time you are forced to name keepers the SP might well be Verly but given it's a decision between two arms an injury might decide it for you.

I also like your idea of possibly cutting Votto. If I did that I'd keep both SP (sans injury).

I'd go with:

Votto
Bautista
CarGo
Verlander
Kershaw.

The other advice is pretty spot on..

Votta
Bautista
CarGo
Verlander
Kershaw

I too think hosmer has a huge upside... but who would you drop for him? None that I see on the above list. He would need to have a MONSTER second half to knock off one of these guys.
