Wait, what if we try at one checkpoint, and if they deny us, we just drive until we find another one? They don't send out a "don't accept checks from these people" type of thing, do they?

i'm not sure how it is where you're at, but at Detroit-Windsor if you get denied entry into Canada you still have to clear US customs on the way back...it's not a "sorry folks, parks closed" type of deal it's all hit or miss as well...i've crossed into Canada where the border agent looked perturbed that i stopped and made him look up from his newspaper...i've also had to answer 20 questions and go inside to answer more
Well, I'm in Illinois and every time I've gone to Canada I've flown, so I have no experience. More than likely, we'd be going north to Minnesota and try to go through at the easternmost crossing, then if that doesn't work we head west and keep trying. I mean, if the chances of getting in without a passport is merely "not 100%", I figure after a few tries we'll get to a more permissive/understanding/apathetic border agent, right?
And I think we'd be fine clearing customs on the way back. I mean, if we can't smuggle anything into the U.S., we don't have to.

I've seen Canadia from the air, so I'm pretty sure it actually exists. But this whole rigmarole about "customs" and "passports to enter" doesn't add up to me. It's like having to show your passport to enter Narnia. Eh.
A year or two ago, there was a big prescription drug ring that boated across the lake and brought back prescription drugs from Canada to sell in the US. There are a lot places on the US/Canada border in Minnesota where nobody is watching for miles. Probably not by car though.

at this point i say you go for it only so i can see how your experience goes

For real. 3 or so years ago I drove my car right into Montreal's back door, and all they did at the border was ask me my business. I told them I planned on dropping plenty of money in their bars and gentleman's establishments, and they let me right in. Stopped and got some cheap booze at the duty free. Canada knew their role. What are they getting too big for their britches now??
The question that needs to be asked is WHY are you driving 9-10 hours thru MN just to enter Canada. Especially if you aren't going anywhere specific. Take your camping gear and go to the BWCA instead. It's a very underrated part of the US imo. And you can get into canada by canoe w/o a passport although it will take you a day or two of paddling.
In addition to that the next land crossing is in Intl falls (pretty sure) so it's not a simple matter to just drive (5 hrs) to the next border crossing.
