Is it even worth stashing Lidge? I've been stashing him all year hoping he'd be a valuable closer for me in the second half ... but now I have the Luxury of having 4 closers on my staff: Papelbon (BOS), Valverde (DET), Crow (KC), and Santos (CWS). Should I just drop him and free up a DL slot to acquire and stash one of the following FA DLers? -- Alfonso Soriano -- Jason Kubel -- Joe Nathan -- David Aardsma -- Homer Bailey -- John Lackey
I've shopped Lidge around a little bit, but no one is really interested in a Lidge on the DL who isn't guarenteed to be the closer when he returns.
I'd also probably add Trumbo from FA to fill in as a utility player to bench Uggla (I have an open bench slot, but I'm keeping it open for now in case I want to add a guy to put on the DL and drop Lidge)
C - Alex Avila (C, preseason YRank=349) 1B - Joey Votto (1B, 5) 2B - Michael Young (1B/2B/3B, 76) 3B - Alex Gordon (3B/OF, 287) SS - Elvis Andrus (SS, 100) OF - Corey Hart (OF, 98) OF - Bobby Abreu (OF, 117) OF - Brett Gardner (OF, 120) Utility - Dan Uggla (2B, 34) Bench - Brett Lawrie (2B/NA, 1232) DL - Matt Holliday (OF/DL, 21)
SP - Cole Hamels (SP, 60) SP - Brett Anderson (SP, 111) RP - Jonathan Papelbon (RP, 93) (closer) RP - Jose Valverde (RP, 130) (closer) P - Aaron Crow (SP/RP, 423) (closer) P - Sergio Santos (RP, 381) (closer) P - Anibal Sanchez (SP, 277) Bench - Johnny Cueto (SP, 212) Bench - Tim Stauffer (SP/RP, 225) Bench - Francisco Liriano (SP/DL, 83) DL - Brad Lidge (RP, 275)
Since you don't have much to lose by dumping Lidge, which I would do with that many closers in a 12-team league, I'd pick up the guy with at least some potential for a big second half: Soriano. I'm not sure what the chances are of that; but, like I said, you've got nothing to lose. Thanks for your help on my Ichiro for a SS question.
I'd definitely dump Lidge. Madison should keep the closer role, even when Lidge returns.
As for your options to replace him on your DL:
Nathan - A 36-year-old question mark, even when he does return.
Aardsma - Likely won't be back until after the All-Star break. That's a lengthy stash. Keep an eye on his progress in late-June.
Bailey - Given his age, he's likely a few weeks away. The Reds will likely be cautious when he returns. A shoulder injury at his age doesn't leave any reason to jump on him yet.
Lackey - Not until he's proved himself once he's healthy. Definitely not worth a DL stash.
I think I would dump Lidge and add Trumbo, he'll give you some more power in your lineup, and could possibly be a keeper. I like adding him then the rest of the guys you mentioned. Soriano would be a "safe" addition in my opinion, and is probably going to slow down a lot after coming back from his quad injury.
