SABER cheat sheet

Postby gravenewworld » Sat May 28, 2011 3:12 am

It is nice to look at peripheral stats to gauge how a player is doing, but when looking at a site like fangraphs, it's difficult to tell how exactly a player compares to the rest of the league because there are no MLB median or average stats for pheripheral stats like LOB%, LD%, HR/FB ratio etc. etc. What's considered league average for SABER stats? What's low? What's high? I'd like to come up with a list that has all the mlb averages for most of the SABER stats in one place in order to determine how a player may regress to the mean. Does anyone know where to find these averages or can they just list them off the top of their head?

Most of those stats you don't want to compare to league averages...I'd compare them to player career averages. You can see what is high and what is low from fangraphs itself...just go to the league leaders page and sort by those specific columns(you can see what lead the league and was was worst in the league)...you can also go back to any other year and see what was high, what was low and you'll get a good sense of what is good and what is not.
