Stand pat, or push harder for 1B and/or closer deals?

Postby taw856 » Wed May 25, 2011 3:11 am

My team is sitting in third place in a 12-team 6x6 h2h league that includes fpct (negligible effect) and holds (forces more use of middle relievers). My team has been weak in power and I've shuffled closers all year (had Broxton, Contreras, Farnsworth and Fuentes as well at various points), but I've been consistent enough elsewhere to get by (first in SB, solid pitching, etc.).

I'm currently proposing two trades that I like to a pair of owners in the bottom half of the league, but based on some other exploratory offers, am not confident will be accepted:
1. C.C. Sabathia and Carlos Lee FOR Kevin Youkilis and Hiroki Kuroda
2. Francisco Liriano FOR Jonathan Papelbon

My question is: looking at my team, do I need to be willing to pay more than that for a 1B and/or closer upgrade, or am I better off just sticking with what I've got if I can't find a better deal?

MY TEAM
C Alex Avila (c)
1B Aubrey Huff (1b, of)
2B Dustin Pedroia (2b)
3B Jed Lowrie (2b, ss, 3b)
SS Hanley Ramirez (ss)
OF Chris Young (of)
OF Martin Prado (2b, 3b, of)
OF Nick Markakis (of)
UTIL Carlos Lee (1b, of)
BN Logan Morrison (of)
BN Matt LaPorta (1b, of)
BN Mark Trumbo (1b)
DL Joe Mauer (c)
-
SP Josh Johnson
SP C.C. Sabathia
SP Josh Beckett
SP Francisco Liriano
RP Sergio Santos
RP Jordan Walden
P Tyler Clippard
P Tony Sipp
BN Ted Lilly
BN Anibal Sanchez
BN Gavin Floyd

(FWIW, the players on waivers in my league that are most commonly owned in Y! leagues are: Yadier Molina, Michael Cuddyer, Melky Cabrera, Jason Bay, Chone Figgins, Michael Brantley, Justin Smoak, Colby Lewis, A.J. Burnett, John Danks, Brian Fuentes and Homer Bailey.)

I don't think those two trades will be accepted. At least if I were the manager I wouldn't.

Is Hosmer available? Huff's been terrible and I don't like him at all this season.

One thing I noticed was that you have Prado sitting at OF. Prado's value diminishes when he's used as an outfielder because his stats are just average as an outfielder. He's valuable because he has the 2b eligibility. I would actually try to sell Pedroia or Prado for a good bat at 1b. Maybe Prado for Konerko or something. As for the outfield spot, you could use Morrison or trade Morrison to someone who believes in his potentials.

Nope. Missed out on that waiver claim.

Right off the bat I would probably drop Huff and pick up Smoak. I can't imagine Smoak not besting Huff in pretty much every category, even with Smoak being young and hitting in Seattle.

I do like the idea of shuffling prado to another position and trading that extra player or prado himself to get some help.

The first trade I would do if I were you (if the other owner likes it) but if that goes through, I don't think I would do the second. CC is a stud and losing him, coupled with who knows how Johnson will come back, makes me hesitant to deal that much SP.

Thanks for the help on mine!

I like the Liriano for Pap deal if the owner will go for it. Liriano will bounce back, I'm confident, but you're deep at SP anyway.

I'd also think about picking up Homer Bailey, he's looked good so far.

Agree with Smoak pickup and letting Huff go.

The first trade looks like a winner for you. Youk is a big upgrade. Losing CC will hurt, but Kuroka is solid. K's will not be there, but everything else will be above average.

good luck

thanks for your help with mine

i think trading too much could really screw you you got a niice balance here with your team there is an obvious need for help at first base though

what about trying to make somthin for morneau he has been down right terribleeeeeeee but he is a major leauge player and has to get hot at some point and you wouldnt have 2 pay that much

maybe look to adam dunns owner your in 3rd so ur team doesnt suck but getting the right one of these guys or somthin like it could win this for you LoL :-)
