Dynasty strategy: stashing youngsters?

Postby fizz » Tue May 24, 2011 10:05 pm

I'm in the first year of a dynasty league: 12 teams, 30 players (plus minor leagues) per team. MiLB rosters are 7 deep, but the draft was only 6 rounds, so 72 prospects were drafted. I was projected for dead last this season, but I've managed to put together a winning record so far, and I'm sitting in 5th place.

With 360 players (plus minor leaguers) off the board, waivers is pretty bare. I've got an empty bench spot, and I'm still rostering guys like Edwin Encarnacion, Mark Reynolds, and the recently-demoted Will Venable, just taking up bench space. Now, I didn't pay the most attention to the team during my finals period, which might explain why I'm still rostering guys like Edwin Encarnacion, Mark Reynolds, and the recently-demoted Will Venable. Anywho, here's my question:

How viable a strategy is it to pick up guys who may (or may not) be getting a June call up? Guys like Trayvon Robinson, maybe Yonder Alonso, unowned minor leaguers with some good potential. My bench spots are really being wasted right now anyway, but is it worth picking up guys like this if they don't get the call soon? Or am I better off grabbing more of a short term option and playing it by ear?

In case it helps, here's the league specs and my team:

I would be ok using a couple of your bench spots for younger players. I would get a list together of the top Milb players available and then choose a couple from that. It looks like you could use some help at SP as well so that is probably where i would start. Alonso is interesting though I just don't think he is going to be all that special. Robinson is also nice but not sure he will be worth owning for a couple years, he seems to be one that will take him sometime to adjust and even then you are looking at mostly speed.
