As part of our ongoing interview series, I was fortunate enough to chat with Christian Yelich last week. Yelich is one of the top prospects in the Florida Marlins organization, and as a 1st Round pick in 2010 (23rd overall), definitely comes with a ton of hype and expectation. His pro career, albeit just starting, has been a success thus far. Over his first 50 games (211 plate appearances across Rookie Ball and the Sally League), his numbers are as follows:
.285/.370/.403 with 3 HR, 28 RBI, 30 R, 12 SB, and a 24:51 BB:K ratio
Strengths
- Good eye for his age, which results in a good number of walks
- Nice, level swing that generates good gap power
- Smart baserunner, and above average speed for his size
- Hard worker, very disciplined nature
- His body (6’4″, 189 pounds) lends itself to plenty of projection
Weaknesses
- Hasn’t hit for much power yet
- Still strikes out too much for a guy who doesn’t hit many homers
- Arm strength needs improving
Conclusion
