Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tyler Beede, one of the top prep arms in the country. Pitching for the Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts, Tyler has put together a tremendous high school career. Initially a starter at an Auburn, MA public high school, his dominating superiority was obvious. His sophomore year stats tell the entire story:

7-1, 114 strikeouts in 56.1 IP (that’s 18.2 K’s per 9 IP!)

He thus transferred to Lawrence to face tougher competition, but the dominance hasn’t gone away. He’s continued to mow down opposing batters at an startling rate, positioning himself as a potential 1st Round pick in the upcoming 2011 MLB Draft.

Strengths
- Incredibly intelligent and focused approach to the game
- Great size, 6’4″, 200 pounds with plenty of room for added muscle
- Fastball sits in the 92-94 range, but can hit higher on occasion
- Change-up is “go to” pitch, results in high number of K’s
- Pitches have quick, late movement that fools hitters

Weaknesses:
- Curveball seen as needing work, but has improved and is currently running 12-6 at around 78 MPH
- Strong draft class, not really a fault of his own

Conclusion
Tyler Beede is easily the top arm coming out of New England, and one of the top high school pitchers in the entire nation. The strongest draft class in years, combined with Beede’s current commitment to Vanderbilt, may push him towards the end of the 1st Round, or even the supplemental round. But he’s got early 1st Round talent in most years, and profiles as a potential front of the rotation starter.
