Need Advice On Struggling Team That Looks Good On Paper

Postby rich101682 » Mon May 16, 2011 12:45 pm

Hey all,

It's been a very frustrating season so far and I'm currently in 16th out of 20th in my league (5x5, OBP instead of AVG, 5 keepers). I feel like I have a pretty solid team overall without any glaring holes for being in a 20 team league. But for some reason, I can't seem to get anything going. Any advice you can give as far as problem areas I should take a look at would be greatly appreciated. I just moved Ryan Roberts and Vicente Padilla for the slumping Alex Rios so hopefully he can turn it around and solidify my offense.

C: Hank Conger
1B: Adam Dunn
2B: Jonathan Herrera
3B: Evan Longoria
SS: Orlando Cabrera
OF: Justin Upton
OF: BJ Upton
OF: Alex RIos
UTIL: Travis Hafner
BN: Dexter Fowler
DL: Jason Bourgeois

SP: Cole Hamels
SP: Matt Garza
SP: Roy Oswalt
SP: Ricky Romero
RP: Joel Hanrahan
RP: Heath Bell
P: Brandon McCarthy
BN: Joe Blanton
BN: Jason Marquis
BN: Jesse Litsch
BN: Josh Collmenter

Thoughts? Anything I'm missing and need to look at fixing in trade? Unlucky? Do I just need to be patient? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow i actually really like your lineup apart from Herrera at 2nd (who i've added and dropped a few times this year already). i like your pitchers as well even for a 20 teamer. I would maybe try to swing a lower tier pitcher to improve 2nd base position. which do you think has been underachieving the most, offense or pitching?

Actually, it's been my hitting that's been lacking. Longoria missed the first month, Dunn was brutal after coming back from surgery. Now that both are back and hitting, Justin Upton seems to be back in one of his slumps. And I haven't been hitting as many home runs as it seems like my team would (looking at you, Dunn).

According to Yahoo Hank Conger is the 23rd best catcher to date (by ranking) with only 5% owning him (I know - most in Yahoo are in 12 team leagues). That seems like it's ripe for an upgrade.

He is, but being in a 20 team league, you take what you can get with a catcher. The only catchers ranked better than Conger on the FA wire are:

Nick Hundley (DL)
Ivan Rodriguez

Trading for a catcher is tricky in a league this size too since no one wants to give theirs up without getting one in return.

Okay - well Hundley is due back in the next 5-10 days so keep an eye on that.
