I just picked up a team and its a roto league, I sort of understand how it works but if somebody can give me an in depth explanation of it that would be greatly appreciated.

It's pretty simple, each stat that is recorded in your league is counted against the other teams and weighed appropriately. So if your team has the most HR's, your points for the HR category will be 10, so if you have 100 roto points that means your team is winning in every category. (assuming its' 5x5 scoring). So needless to say it's important in roto to be competitive in all of the categories and to have a more well rounded team than say a points league or perhaps H2H.
