Which pitchers to pick up? Help needed - WHIR

Postby justnotcricket » Thu May 12, 2011 10:20 am

So far I have the best hitting line up in my league but need to deepen my pitching. I have sent trade requests to everyone in the league offering up the likes of Ellsbury, Sanchez, Stubbs, Davis, C.Young, Rios and even Choo in exchange for top 25 SP and noone will trade with me even though their batting sucks. So i am left with Free Agents. I don't want to simply drop top hitters onto the wire so my plan is to drop Davis, put Rios on DL and pick up 2 SP from free agency. Currently available are:

Homer Bailey, Jake Peavy, Ivan Nova, Fausto Carmona, Jake Arrieta, Tim Stauffer, Madison Bumgarner, Joel Pineiro, Tom Gorzelanny, Gavin Floyd, Philip Humber, Travis Wood, James McDonald.

Who would you pick - we score QS, W, SV, ERA, WHIP & K/9 - Really appreciate your thoughts.

Cheers guys - Always WHIR. My Team - 10 Team - 6x6 - H2H Points - Daily changes

C - R.Martin
1B - A.Gonzales, G.Sanchez, I.Davis
2B - R.Cano
3B - J.Bautista
SS - A.Ramirez
OF - SS Choo
OF - A.Rios
OF - D.Stubbs
OF - C.Young
OF - J.Ellsbury
2B/3B/SS - J.Uribe
SP - D.Haren, J.Weaver, B.Morrow, A.Sanchez, J.De La Rosa
RP - C.Kimbrel, S.Santos, R.Madson

I would say right away go with Pineiro, not only because of his previous results but because he's on a team that gets Ws...I just picked him up too, I really like him. The second would be between Peavy and Homer Bailey if you ask me...Peavy has mad strikeout potential, probably more so than Bailey, and they're both on solid teams (although the CWS haven't been performing lately but they should), so i would probably say Peavy based on how mank Ks he can get you. Hope this helps, good luck!! ;-D

I'd probably go with Floyd and Bumgarner. Pineiro and Carmona's K-rates are just too low, without giving a great ERA or WHIP too make up for it.

If you want to take a chance, Peavy, Bailey, Wood, and McDonald all have some interesting upside. But right now Bumgarner looks good, and I'd take him over that group. That could change quickly though.

Another thought, can you use a rotation of pitchers from this group, and just pick them up for favorable matchups and then drop them afterwards? That might be a good option for now, until one or more prove themselves worthy of a full-time roster spot.

I would go with Bumgarner.

After a rough start, he is dialed in right now.
He was great down the stretch last year.
Average strike out guy but in a great pitchers park.

Is Bedard available?
I think he is one more quality start away from being a viable SP.

Bumgarner is a no brainer. Depending on your league scoring if your league gives a lot of points for W I'd go Pineiro, if it's K's I'd go either Peavy or Bailey (with a slight lean towards Bailey).

Personally I like Bailey to finally put it all together, but I can see the argument for Bumgarner, he's logged like 4 consecutive Quality Starts, just can't get a Win!

Bumgarner for sure.
Floyd or Stauffer. Both have very nice xFIP.
Piniero has been lucky, and has a terrible K/9.
