I just heard the Jay's G.M. on the radio and he said that if they broke camp today Kerry Ligtenberg would be the closer. That said no one seems to be a lock for the job in Toronto yet.
Interesting. Ligtenberg has been lighting it up this spring -- at least in comparison to the other candidates. I think he's worth a flier since Lopez, Adams and Speier are hardly proven candidates, and at least Ligtenberg closed for a division champion Braves team back in the day.
That's a surprise, since I don't think he's on many lists (usually it's 70% Lopez, 30% Speier).
However, given that the Blue Jays play "Richardi Ball" which is pretty much sabermetrics (statistics bases) it would not surprise me in the least to have no true "closer" but striclty play the matchups and stats.
Looper isn't pitching that bad (he hasn't given up one walk this spring). He has gotten hits but it probably means he is throwing it over the plate and trying to work out his control.
I just read an article from the Globe and Mail that says that there are still 6 different people in line for the job (Lopez, Speier, Lightenberg, Adams, De Los Santos and I forget the 6th, it could be Jason Kershner).
Tosca hoped that somebody, preferably Speier or Lopez, would grab the job in spring training but that hasn't happened and they may start the season with a bullpen by committee.
I have always felt that by the end of the season Lopez will have the most saves but Speier and Lightenberg will have some as well. Adams has actually pitched so poorly that he may not even make the team.
Well...I waited it out w/ Riske on a lot of teams, Urbina on a few teams, and now I'll have to do the same w/ Lopez. Didn't draft him too high, but still had him above Biddle, Koch, Graves, McDoug and the bunch.
