Trade offer for King Felix - WHIR

Postby RUnited » Fri May 06, 2011 2:06 am

I've just received a trade offer for King Felix that I'm considering... I'm quite happy with my outfield so I'm only looking at trading pitchers... I'm also a rook so I don't know when to sit pitchers out and have used everyone pretty much every game... I have very high win ratings, but also high loss rates. I think to make this work I prefer to get a good closer because with closers I don't need to take them in or out...

The league is a points league, a Win is worth 15pts, loss -5pts, K's 1pt, and saves are worth 6 points.

Here's my pitching staff:

Starting Pitchers:
Felix
Weaver
Ubaldo
Chachin
Masterson
CJ Wilson
Jonathan Sanchez

Relief Pitchers:
Neftali Feliz
Ryan Madson
Huston Street
Fuentes

His pitching staffs:

Starting Pitchers:
Josh Johnson
Shaun Marcum
Jaime Garcia
Chris Carpenter
Zack Geinke
Michael Pineda
Francisco Liriano
Jake Peavy

Relifer Pitchers:
Valverde
Marmol
John Axford
Matt Capps

Who should I ask for if I am willing to trade King Felix? I don't mind trading him so much because he's with the Mariners and it's very tough to predict when he's going to get a win. He gets lot of K's so that's a good thing, but I don't think I will maximize his usage in the long run.

Hmmm, I don't really see any need to swap anyone out. Maybe Carpenter might get you a few more Ws (and slightly better pitcher's park), but would it be enough to make up for the extra Ks (and I suppose a few more Ls) from Felix?

So an official offer has been made:

Felix plus Fuentes

For Marmol plus Garcia.

Take it or leave it?

Well,
Felix > Garcia
Marmol > Fuentes

Hmmm, I think that's pretty even. I'd actually be inclined to take it (Marmol for the Ks; Garcia is on a better team and better ball park and could give you a few more Ws - coupled with the Marmol Ks, could help offset the drop in Ks from Felix).

And who knows if Fuentes keeps his job after Baily comes back in a few weeks.

I think I'd take this. Anyone else have other thoughts?

You should get a better return then that for King Felix. He may not get as many wins as you'd like, but he's a stud in everything else and probably the second best SP in the majors.

I agree with the post above me.. Felix is in the cy young convo almost yearly it seems. He has had a bad start this season, and I think it will pay off if you keep him.

Thanks for the help on mine!

Agree with the other posters that Felix is Cy Young-caliber, and if this was standard 5x5 you don't do this deal, because Felix is going to give you better WHIP, ERA and Ks and the win differential with Garcia won't make up for it.

But - and take this with a grain of salt 'cause I've never played in a points league - my thinking is that the Wins are slightly more valuable (takes 15 Ks to equal one win, if I read the original post correctly, and i didn't see anything on WHIP or ERA). If Garcia wins 3-4 more games that's an extra 45-60 points, plus the extra saves (and probably Ks) from Marmol over Fuentes.

I could be completely wrong of course <g>.

I think you really need to let us know how many points the Top-20 pitchers scored last year according to their names. You have an unusual scoring system. Normally, I would say no way on that trade, but each trade is dependent on the scoring setup.

Thanks for the reply, guys, but I have done the deal. Here's my thought process:

Here's how scoring works in our league:

Innings Pitched (IP) 1
Wins (W) 10
Losses (L) -5
Complete Games (CG) 5
Shutouts (SHO) 10
Saves (SV) 6
Hits (H) -0.5
Earned Runs (ER) -1
Home Runs (HR) -2
Walks (BB) -0.5
Strikeouts (K) 1
Batters Grounded Into Double Plays (GIDP) 2
Pickoffs (PICK) 1
No Hitters (NH) 15
Blown Saves (BSV) -5

Felix Hernandez had 410 pts last season in our league. Marmol had 350pts.

I figured I lost K's, but I've earned a lot more saves (6pts for each save) and possibly some more wins because Cardinals are a better team than Mariners.

Felix may end up Cy Young winner again, but on points system I got 2 players for 1. If Marmol and Garcia stay fit, I'd get same amount of wins as Felix + the extra saves from Marmol. Marmol should also make up for some lost K's.

Garcia's ERA could potentially be around the same as Felix if he keeps up his good work as well...
