I'm mildly intrigued by this offer I just received. I would hate to lose Eithier, but adding Ryan Zimmerman (and Papelbon) may be worth it. Would appreciate any thoughts or advice...
I give Andre Eithier, Alex Gordon, Jordan Zimmerman
I get Ryan Zimmerman, Jonathan Papelbon, Daniel Hudson

Alex Gordon might be indeed breaking out but a few good weeks doesn't amount to much compared to how much he has disappointed. I like Ethier just fine but he tends to be quite streaky. Ryan Zimmermann is the best player in this deal by far so I would try to acquire him. If Hudson and Jordan Zimmerman are comparable in your mind, I'd pull the trigger. Good luck!
To be perfectly honest with you I think this is a hard deal to make...lets break it down player by player...Andre Ethier is, for the most part, a stud. Can he be streaky?? Sure, what players aren't? I don't quite know if risking that Zimmerman is going to come back from injury and be his monster self would be a good idea or not (I mean, he's obviously going to be a top 3B right? But you have Wright and Jones and I think you losing two OF would not be worth just Zimmerman). Papelbon is obviously gonna help you out right? But you currently have 3 closers in Bell, Farsnworth and League (who will probably lose his job to Aardsma soon, but still...). And to me I'm not sure what to think of Hudson...I loved him during draft time; I missed on him and was upset but I'm not liking what I am seeing at all from him right now, so ultimately I guess those two pitchers J Zimmerman and Hudson would be determined by how much you value one or the other. Oh, and Alex Gordon...wow...who knows what to expect from this guy ya know! haha I personally am loving what I'm seeing from him, I actually already tried to pull a trade off for him but again thats just me, because others are just fed up with his hype-and-no-production and say sell high now...ANYWAY, ultimately, I think you losing Ethier AND Gordon to the risky injury situation with Zimmerman is not worth it based on the players you already have. Papelbon definietely makes it a little bit more interesting but still, I just don't know if I'd pull the trigger. Hope that helps, and I hope I'm not being too "undecided" with some things but I figure a little in depth look on how I feel may or may not help you out haha Good luck !!!
Well, BigAnt, I'd say that you perfectly summarized exactly why I'm asking for advice in the first place! The deal hinges on whether Ryan Zimmerman returns to form after the injury. If he does, I think it would be a win for me. Gordon is hot... but will he cool? Zimmerman is doing well, and Hudson is not, but on sheer talent I'd have to say that Hudson should have the better future...
Ah jeez... I don't know. C'mon Cafe brothers... need more input here! I'm almost pulling the trigger... Help!
HAHAHA I figured I didnt provide any answer, I just kinda did exactly what you said, wrote more in depth about what you're wondering...OK so this will be my answer...do you like the rest of your OF? If you do and you feel comfortable then DO IT cuz you're right, if ZImmerman comes back to form you win...but if you think your OF is shaky then don't do it because you have very good 3B-men...but if i had to give u a straight shot answer I'd say do it, you'll most likely win with Zimmerman, you win with Papelbon and like I said earlier, I like Hudson a lot, and I think he can definitely turn it around (I'll think he'll be better than J Zimmerman in the long run)
If there was a more clear timetable on Zimmerman's return I'd like this trade more. Just to clarify, if you go through with the trade, I'm assuming Zimmerman will eventually be your Util, but in the meantime will you have Bloomquist in OF and Polanco at Util? I don't love that, so I think if you are going to give up both Ethier and Gordon, you should start looking for an addition to your OF as well. the questions around Zimmerman make me hesitant, but I think you would be getting the best player (potentially) in the deal.
In the end though I don't think I'd take the deal. I don't think your pitching gets an upgrade, and losing Ethier and Gordon to start Zimmerman at some point, but currently Polanco and Bloomquist is a pretty big dropoff. You have 3B covered, so trading 2 OF who are playing great for a Util that you'll get who knows when doesn't seem like a great deal to me.
