I have no idea who this guy is, but he had a scorching spring (.509/.603/.660) and he's off to a fantastic start this year, with a .355/.429/.581 line and 4 homers, after having hit two today.
He's been getting regular at-bats recently, as Melvin Mora's been injured... but the way he's swinging his bat, how can the D-Backs not find regular playing time for him? Yahoo has him as OF-eligible, so that would be fantastic if he could find some time out there when Mora came back as well. I've already snagged him in one deep Cafe league, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled... maybe 2011's Ben Zobrist?
I wouldn't expect Roberts' AVG or power to continue, but he could be a solid source of stats in deeper leagues, especially ones which count BBs and Ks (his BB/K rate has been quite good throughout his career). If he gets a full season, I'd look for a line of: .280 - 20 - 80 - 80 - 10. It's like Michael Young Lite. Not bad for a guy who qualifies at 3B/OF in Yahoo and can be found on the WW at the moment.
You pick up these types of guys just in case they stay hot all year but the reality is every year there are a dozen guys who have hot Aprils out of nowhere and only 1 or 2 of them keep it up. That is the concept of selling high on them, you are assuming that maybe 25% stay worth it and 75% of the time you are winning the trade.
Any time some random nobody has a hot start it is worth picking him up and just seeing where it goes though. I don't think people realize how rare it is for something like Bautista to happen though. To go from a career part time player to the highest ISO in baseball by a wide margin is something that just doesn't really happen enough to expect someone else to do it.
i'm not buying into him, just seems like a utility player who's hot right now. The dudes 30 and has no track record of this sort of production. deep league? sure, but i'm not dropping anyone considerable for him.
he is getting his 2nd start tonight at 2B for the slumping Kelly Johnson. this will make 2 starts at 2B for him. he would need another 3 starts to gain 2B eligibility in yahoo. I wonder what the future holds for this situation. Johnson had a really good season last year for Arizona, but the year before was brutal.
