whilst I'm certainly not taking the government's side, it's pretty well known playing poker for real money online is illegal, so none of this is really that surprising, and anyone who had a majority of their assets tied up in this should have known better. I have an active account on AP, and I keep less than $100 in there because I was worried something like this would happen. You think if - dramatically speaking - these places go down and the government takes them over, they're going to offer refunds?

uh, wrong. it is not illegal to play poker online for real money. since it's not illegal and the government wanted it to be illegal, they made it harder to get funds off and on the poker sites by making it illegal for financial institutions to transfer funds to or from the poker websites. they did this by adding the UIGEA as a provision onto the safe port act which was an act that nobody could vote against and had nothing to do with online gambling (still blows my mind that they can do crap like that). the UIGEA forced the poker sites into finding ways around it which is why they're now being charged with bank fraud and money laundering.

basically, **** the government.

also, while i i'd be worried if i had money on ultimate bet or AP, i think it's pretty likely that people will get their money from full tilt and pokerstars. both of those are huge companies that still serve a lot of people outside of the US and it would look pretty bad to european, asian, australian and other players around the world if US players didn't get their money back.

another thing i hate about how unfairly these sites are being targeted by the government is that these sites donate A LOT of money to charity. they have tournaments where the entire rake will go to charity, and they'll have tournaments with no rake where a large portion or all of the prize pool goes to charity. pretty sure they did this for haiti and japan and probably a bunch of other times i can't recall.

I don't see how anybody could think that gambling online was legal. There are very few places in the US that gambling is legal and just because you're doing it on a computer doesn't really change anything... can you go buy pot online from Amsterdam and be outside of the law? That said, it's ridiculous that the government still tells people what they can and can't do with their body and their assets. But, it's pretty obvious that gambling online is illegal.

oh right, it's not illegal to play. It's illegal for these places to operate.

Again, I'm not on the govt side, but everyone should have seen this coming.

how can you come in here and post so definitively about something you obviously have no clue about? The only law we have that applies to gambling online is the federal wire act which a court has ruled only applies to online sports betting and not other types of online gambling. there is no law in the united states that prohibits playing poker online.

This.

Just because you guys might have assumed online poker was illegal doesn't mean it was. Please point out where exactly online poker is named as an illegal activity.

According to the UIGEA, "unlawful internet gambling" means to place, receive, or otherwise knowingly transmit a bet or wager by means of the internet where such bet is unlawful under any law in the State in which the bet is initiated, received, or otherwise made. Thus, the UIGEA prohibits online gambling sites from performing transactions with American financial institutions.

Ah, so that's where the bank fraud/money laundering thing comes from. Yep, this is garbage. :-t If the only rule (not law) being broken here is "no online poker", then again we're all victims of stupid moralism.

OK, I'll go open a casino tomorrow in your neighborhood and see how fast it gets shut down. Playing poker isn't illegal, putting money on poker is illegal. Why do people think that the internet is beyond all laws? Just because it's hosted overseas doesn't mean you're magically lifted overseas and out of US jurisdiction. I think you should be able to bet as much as you want, any day of the week in your own home, at a bar, or on the computer. But as the laws stand now, it's pretty cut and dry to me that it's illegal.
