Jay Bruce Transaction. Am I crazy for considering this?

Postby GardnerRunsRampant » Fri Apr 15, 2011 7:52 am

It's only been a few weeks, but Bruce is frustrating me to no end with his current strikeout rate. I understand he is focusing now more on seeing the ball, but how long does that last this season. That said, Bruce has the potential to be a great keeper. Drew Stubbs is available on the waiver wire. Am I crazy for considering dropping Bruce for Stubbs?

My league awards points as follows:

Singles: 1 point
Doubles: 2 points
Triples: 3 points
Walks: 1 point
Errors: 1 point
Home Runs: 4 points
Strikeouts: -1 point
Runs: 1 point
Runs Batted In: 1 point
Stolen Bases: 1 point

You're not crazy for considering it, Stubbs being on the wire is crazy! There must be someone else on your team you can drop for Stubbs, then if you really can't be patient with Bruce then trade him

Being a keeper league, I am fortunate enough to have some very good outfielders in addition to Bruce. I have Matt Kemp, Colby Rasmus, Ichiro Suzuki, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Justin Upton. The only other option that may be worth considering is Ellsbury (slotted further down in the lineup now). Ellsbury has nice value in our league since we count runs scored and stolen bases (while not subtracting for caught stealing). My DH and utility spots are taken up by the outfielder list above, so that is not an option as well. I tried proposing a few trades to clear space to add Stubbs, but I am getting nervous waiting around too long and him being gone.

I agree.

While dropping Bruce might be painful now, having a guy like Stubbs in your lineup will make up for it.

Thank you both for your advice. Bruce might end up being better long term, but I think Stubbs is the more consistent choice. Teams in my league rarely pick up players if their season numbers don't look good, so if Bruce starts heating up with the summer weather, he might still be around. Decision made, welcome to the team Stubbs!

I would not drop Bruce for Stubbs. I agree Stubbs should be rostered but I would rather have Bruce for the season. There has to be someone else to drop. At the very minimum trade Bruce. It is way to early to start cutting players in frustration.

Stubbs is certainly worth adding, but it would be very foolish to drop Bruce.

The question boils down to who carries the least risk. Off-season projections had Bruce ahead of Stubbs, but Bruce is not coming close to those projections in either average, on base percentage, or strikeouts. Small sample size indeed. However, recently his vision at the plate has been a concern of his manager. I don't doubt his power potential, but I am starting to doubt his ability to hit for average and get on base. I believe Bruce will become a very good major league player, but I do not believe anymore that he will become elite. I watch a lot of baseball, and I just don't see it.

I decided to go with Stubbs based on the following assumptions:

(1) Other managers in my league get caught up in ytd stats (total points scored). They make decisions based on that criteria. With Bruce's bad start to the season, his ytd stats will not be anywhere near the top for awhile. If he starts to heat up, it is not out of the question for him to still be available.

(2) Our league scoring details favor top of the lineup hitters.

(3) Risk. Bruce reaching his potential depends on his ability to keep his average up, strikeouts down, and extra base hits up. Stubbs can score in a much greater variety of ways limiting risk.
