Is it a good strategy to try and have backups at most spots?

I tried to get backups all spots except catcher, figuring I would be able to fill all roster spots more frequently. Is this a good strategy or should I drop some of my weaker offensive players, and just go for the best possible players?

I try to get a decent back-up at most positions, with C, 2B, SS usually being the toughest ones. However, if it turns out that the only players available at draft time are what are essentially waiver wire quality, then I'll take the best player. For example, there was nothing decent available at SS in my last round, so I chose Laynce Nix.

??

In a keeper league, I'd much rather stash a 23 year old with 20+ homer power playing in one of the best hitting parks on my bench with my last pick than some crappy veteran who's picked mostly for name recognition. Worst case, you grab whoever's available on the waiver wire when the kid flames. Best case---well, that's how I got Albert Pujols on my team.

I don't really worry about backups as I am confident that, at least early in the year, there will be guys available to trade. I did end up with some though but am mostly more trying to get the best guy available.

With your lineup though, you may want to try a backup catcher. That's a good position to have a backup if you can figure out how the 'rotation' works and when Pudge will be getting a break and all of that.

My team is: Ramirez, Soriano, Sheffield, Sexson, Vazquez, Foulke, G. Anderson, C. Lee, Berroa, Zambrano, Livan Hernandez, D. Young, Santana, Contreras, Donnelly, Ensberg, R. Hernandez, Worrell, A. Benitez, A. Sanchez, Jason Phillips, Crosby, Riske

What I try to do is to have one guy on my bench who can play multiple positions, Robby Hammock, Jason Phillips etc. other than that my bench just has the best available player.

i choose to draft the best player available. i always figure if things go south, i can pick up that guys replacement quickly for the short-term and trade from my depth to replace him.
