I finished A Storm of Swords a few weeks ago. I was literally shaking at the end. Maybe it was because I had gone two days without sleep, but damn, my mind was blown.
Unfortunately, book 4 seems to be all pointless filler so far.

Yeah, the first 3 are some of the best reading you can get...books 4 and 5 are a step back from that so it's a bit disappointing. Here's to hoping book 6 starts to get back to what made this series one of the best!!

Minor spoiler:
Could have easily been solved if there was a big fight at the start of the show between the white walkers and the nights watch.
It was a decent premiere, but yes, I was disappointed mainly with the scenes beyond the wall. The Tywin/Tyrion and the Unsullied scenes made up for it.
FWIW, this is the first season in which I've read the books in advance of the seasons. It's hard not to nitpick about deviations from the books, but I'm appreciating them as separate works.

As a season premier you had to expect some "this is where we left off" stuff. Even so my wife spoiled it by constantly asking questions and I had to rewatch it by myself. The verbal beat down that Tywin gave Tyrion was perfect. It was such cruel scene and does much to explain Tyrion and looking ahead it will make the finale for this season so much more satisfying.
Bron and Davos got some good character development but where was Strong Belwas?!?! Wasn't he supposed to be with Barristan SElmy on the docks in Qarth? He is a great character and I hope that they didnt write him out of the series.

I think if you're referring to that particular scene, that's probably next season. That's nearly at the end of A Storm of Swords and the book is getting the two-season treatment.

Omitting Belwas from the dock scene might make sense as the scene was primarily focused on Barristan Selmy revealing himself outright to Dany as her father's kingsguard. Other than that, yes, I was disappointed Belwas didn't appear and hope he appears some time in the series.
Speaking of Barristan's immediate reveal, I thought it made sense for the TV series because most viewers would recall Selmy from Season 1. However, Selmy disguising himself as Arstan Whitebeard had a purpose. I suppose no sewer swimming for Barristan then.
