Brandon Belt on opening day?

Postby CBMGreatOne » Mon Mar 28, 2011 7:31 pm

"Brandon Belt is starting at first base in Monday's game against the Athletics.
Very interesting. The Giants have most of their regulars in there against their cross-bay rivals, including Aubrey Huff in right field. Most believe the 22-year-old Belt will begin the year with Triple-A Fresno, but perhaps the Giants see Huff as a better replacement for Cody Ross in right field. Be sure to track this situation closely, as Belt would have immediate value in fantasy leagues if he makes the Opening Day roster." -Rotoworld

I think I remember reading that if he did break camp with the club, he'd hit seventh, indicating that there was an outside chance he'd be there opening day. Now with Cody Ross dinged up, maybe he'll get that chance. Would he be an immediate add in mixed leagues? What do we expect?

You can expect anything from Smoak to Posey production if he makes the opening day roster. ;-)

Does that help?

Hey that's exactly what I was thinking. I guess I was hoping somebody had a strong feeling that was a shade more specific.

Unfortunately kab is correct.

With that said, treat him like you would any young prospect with good upside....if he's playing, pick him up and ride it out for a few weeks and see what happens. No risk in picking him up as a FA/last round option but huge reward...just don't go dropping legit players for him, he's a util/bench option until proven otherwise. Of course this is only if he makes the team out of spring.

the thing that Belt adds is a little bit of speed to the mix, he was a 20/20 guy last season

put aside what Belt's production could be for a minute. lets say Belt is producing. once Ross returns you would think he would be a regular? what about Huff? with the production Huff could give you would have to say that Huff would be a regular all the time regardless of whether he is in RF or 1B, right?
personal reasons. I recently traded for Huff. I also picked up Ross off waivers hoping the giants add him to the DL soon so I can pick up someone else.

as for Belt. roll the dice. he has potential so you might as well go with him.

I definitely won't be starting him vs. Kershaw but will be fun to watch.

Belt is gonna bring the ruckus to the NL and the Giants have a surprisingly decent looking offense other than tejada.

Opening day line up will probably be something like:
Torres
Sanchez
Huff
Posey
Burrell
Tejada
Belt
Sandoval
Timmy

i would assume that Tejada slides down into the 8-hole when we don't face a lefty but who knows.
