I agree with pretty much everything you said. Great, reliable production early is the key to winning draft day...save the risks for later on.
I do like Ryan Howard in ESPN leagues though (ADP 26.9). Solid value for that area of the draft IMO.

I've learned a few things in my many years of fantasy baseball.
1) Don't draft for upside early, draft for safety
2) Don't draft for mediocrity late, draft for upside
3) Don't nitpick your draft picks. The difference between the guys in round 1 after Pujols is so small it isn't going to make a huge difference who you pick as an example. People stress over how some guy is a steal in the 9th round but overpriced in the 7th round when odds are the difference in value is $2-$3 in that range so hardly a difference. Your projections aren't good enough to make $2 a valid difference in value, nobodies are.

I woudn't be too concerned with Howard's power, I think there is a good chance he hits at least 40 homers again. That ankle injury in August slowed him down right when he typically starts heating up.

Wow, the reasoning on not to draft Ryan Howard is ridiculous. If people are undervaluing him this much this year, better for me. I'll gladly take him early in the second round and laugh all the way to the bank.

I agree, why take Howard in the 2nd, when you can take Dunn in the 3rd/4th or Konerko in the 6th+
