In one catcher league's I wouldn't touch a catcher until the last few rounds. Unless they slip a couple of rounds the top guys go way to early for me. I'd say he'll probably go in round 3 but every league has "that guy" who takes him in the 2nd. So it may come down to you knowing your league-mates.
Hard to say. I'm a "tier drafter". I want value. If I get Mauer, I've got tier value over most the field. If he goes early then I prolly wait a while on C's. But, I'm always tempted to take elite players at thin positions.
I agree with whoever said there's always the potential for "that guy" who really wants to have the best catcher since the spot is so weak. Typically, I'd expect him to go mid-3rd round but wouldn't be surprised if he went as high as mid-2nd.
As for me, I am not touching him (or any top 5 catcher for that matter) unless they fall really low (like 5th round for Mauer). Because you only start one catcher, there won't be more than 10 drafted. You can definitely wait for potential talent. Matt Weiters has huge upside and is being drafted in the 18th round, just as an example.
I've seen Mauer go in the 3rd round in a couple of mocks and in a league draft I'm currently in, he went mid-4th. That sounds about right. If you've taken a couple of power hitters in the first few rounds, Mauer complements well with a superior average and a better R/RBI count than other catchers.
