Utley: When does he become worth the risk?

Hello cafe,

Here's one I've been considering this one in a few leagues: Depending on the format, of course, when would you finally allow yourself to draft Chase Utley?

When would you take him:
- in a standard 12-team roto?
- In a standard 12-team H2H?

It's pretty much a question of the value of the pick vs. the risk/reward of Chase Utley. According to all the current drafting data, he's still being grabbed rather high up. At what pick would you say, "That's low enough, I'll take the risk now" ?

I am very interested in others opinions on this as well, glad you posted this. For me, I need a little more info, but as of now, if he was there in the 5th round, I'd go after him. It sounds serious where surgery may be required, but as long as he's back by All-Star break, he will help you down the stretch. Make sure you have a viable backup obviously.

I'm likely to avoid Utley in all my drafts, considering tendinitis can be a nagging issue at the least. Then, there's also the realistic possibility of needing surgery.

That's the one interesting variable that H2H presents. If you feel better about his chances of playing well later on in the year, then at what point would he be worth stashing? When every week is a new season, Utley might see increased value.
