I think I heard on the radio that Australia rejected entry to a Japanese ship this week because it had unacceptable levels of radiation. :-o

yeah, i don't know what was crazier: that it was alive, or the effort it took to rescue it

Humans have a soft spot for animals in distress, i'm not surprised by the effort at all. Also, I think the fact that they found the dog alive gave rescuers some hope that a person may be alive in the debris as well. They did mention that the rescuers hoped the dog would lead them to it's owner.

National Geographic channel released a documentary type show on this disaster last night. I DVR'd it and am watching it now. Some of the footage of the tsunami defies description. It's like Old Testament Wrath of God.

i know these things are deceptively strong, but this one still surprised me at how long it lasted (~7min) before it finally got crazy
