Humans have a soft spot for animals in distress, i'm not surprised by the effort at all. Also, I think the fact that they found the dog alive gave rescuers some hope that a person may be alive in the debris as well. They did mention that the rescuers hoped the dog would lead them to it's owner.

National Geographic channel released a documentary type show on this disaster last night. I DVR'd it and am watching it now. Some of the footage of the tsunami defies description. It's like Old Testament Wrath of God.
