Good guesses, all! It's certainly unusual enough for Piersall, and shows the win-at-all-costs mentality of Cobb. Kelly was another player in Cobb's mold (actually, they probably broke Cobb's mold, but Kelly comes close). An excellent baserunner who always knew what was going on around him, he once pulled off this stunt when he noticed that the umpire was watching the play elsewhere. Good thing umpires work in teams these days... :-D
