Please Help! New League! WHIR!

Postby RASportsnut » Tue Mar 08, 2011 1:32 pm

Back for another fantasy baseball year.

I've joined a new league (16 team H2H) with some interesting stats:
Hitting: 1 point each for H,R,RBI,3B,HR,SB, and IBB.
Pitching: 1 point for K, 3 points for QS, 5 points each for W, SO, and CG, 10 points for NH

We draft 24 players, no more than 7 pitchers, with no relievers, all starters. C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 3 OF, U ~ 5 pitchers start each week.

I will be drafting 8th in a snake draft. Looking at the stats, I am leaning to the belief that star pitchers are the real cream of this league, so I'm tempted to take Halladay, Feliz, Lee type of pitcher first. I'm betting the 2 SS will be taken before me, along with the usual suspects.

Is my thinking about going after pitching first flawed? If not, why not.

Maybe if Halladay is there, I just don't like starting with a pitcher, even if your setup might favor such. I'd have a tough time passing on Votto or AG or Long if they are there at #8

Say lets look at Halladay. Best case is:

1 start in a week: 1 win - 9K - 1 QS - 17 PTS
2 starts in a week: 2 Wins - 17K - 2 QS - 33 PTS

I took a quick peek at Longoria and it seems like he averaged somewhere between 10-15 pts on a given week. They may be wrong, but looked at a few options.

So you're either banking on a consistent 10-15 from a solid hitter or maybe getting a monster from a high level SP.

I would think grab Felix/Halladay/Lince...if not there grab a top hitter, then grab one of the other top 20 SP with the next pick

I agree with Tanyon....I am in a points league that is has a more aggressive hitters scoring system and a similar pitching scoring system (16 teams) and the pitching is right on par with the hitting. I am DEFINITELY a hitter first guy for many reasons, mainly the lack of predictability in SP but in this case I think that you have to grab a NO BRAINER pitcher and then snag hitting in the following rounds. Another thing that I found helpful, although this may seem obvious, is to focus on pitchers that consistently throw a lot of innings. Not necessarily important in a rotisserie league but it is helpful in a points league.

I think if you can grab a nice hitter (HR look like a 4 point score to me - H, R, RBI, HR) you do that. I think for pitching you find guys that give you a good K rate with a high percentage of QS (which hopefully leads to wins as well) - obviously the top options (Felix, Lince, Halladay, etc.) but there are a lot of guys under the radar who look like they can be a good player in this system.

Any help with mine is appreciated: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=423520
