Stealing? Morality question... input needed

Postby dans2 » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:12 pm

I have a question of morality.. to keep things short... I have a wealthy friend, who was having a party at his house... he brought me in a room (a common area) to show me his cigar collection (over a thousand cigars). He told myself and a friend of mine to help ourselves to whatever we'd like. My friend accepted and took one, but I thanked him but said no thanks. However, as the party went on and I drank a bit, i changed my mind and decided to indulge. I went to the humidor and took one, and didn't really think much of it. The next day I got thinking about it, I began to think it was kind of rude of me to just go back up on my own and take it. Even though he insisted we help ourselves, would you guys consider this stealing or immoral? I feel bad, but my intention was never to actual steal or betray his trust, which is why i'm thinking about it and feel odd. Thanks in advance for honest replies.

Dans, if he is ok with offering you one in the first place he is evidently a fairly generous guy. I would let him know that you went back later to take one, tell him what you took, and it should be A ok. Good luck dans. What kinda cigar?? :-B

Yes, very generous. The fact of the price of them isn't an issue. He is extremely wealthy, and money is not a thing to him. It's just the manner I took it makes me feel weird, but I almost feel as if I bring it up to him, it will seem suspicious.

I don't think you stole it, per se. It was offered to you. I mean sure you declined initially, but it's not like you went back and ransacked his collection or were looking to stockpile cigars taking advantage of a rich friend. I also don't think his wealth matters in this instance. Let him know hey, I know I said I didn't want a cigar when you offered but later I went back and snagged one. Thanks again. No sense in being anything other than honest here. You said he was your friend; I'm sure he'll understand.

You probably should have taken two. That way at least you'd have something to share with Satan while you rot in hell, thief.

Actually, the more I think about it the more I agree with this:

I would completely let this drop from your mind. You're fine. I wouldn't bring it up at all or think about it anymore. He offered one, you took one a little later. No different than someone offering you a coke from their fridge ... you say not now ---- later on you're thirsty you have a coke.

He offered, you accepted, just not at the same time he offered. Like everyone else said, just tell him later that after a while you went back and got one, tell him which kind, and tell him you enjoyed it. He'll be cool with that.
