Rios or Hanson as my last keeper?

Postby MaineIngredient » Sat Mar 05, 2011 10:47 pm

Hey, thanks for checking this out...

So I'm in a fairly competitive 12 team, traditional 5x5 mixed keeper league (R/HR/RBI/SB/AVG x W/K/SV/ERA/WHIP). We keep six guys, and I'm debating between Tommy Hanson and Alex Rios as my 6th. It's important to note that I'm picking dead last (12th) in the snake draft, and while I like Rios' potential 2011 (including steals which I am lacking everywhere else), I love Hanson and just don't think he would fall to me with the 84th pick, considering the few stud pitchers remaining (at the moment: Greinke, Latos, Gallardo, Carpenter). And with having to wait essentially two rounds before picking again, I'd like to have Hamels and Hanson as anchors.

Thanks very much for any input regarding Rios/Hanson!

Current keepers:
C Buster Posey
1B Adrian Gonzalez
2B Dan Uggla
OF Jayson Werth
SP Cole Hamels

I'd keep Hanson.... and I'd be tempted to take some of those other pitchers if they fell to me. Rios has good level, but I think he is also another player whose value could be had later in teh draft with the righ tpick of a player with some upside. Hansen- I'd lock in on him,

That's what I was thinking; Rios is highly ranked, but I think his stats can be recouped later on. I'm kind of hoping to use my end of 7th rd pick on Alexei Ramirez. After him, SS gets real messy. But that's another topic. Thanks for the help.

I have no faith in Rios. Give me Hanson easily here.

Throw out Werth and keep Rios over him (better ballpark and lineup around him - added Dunn's big bat, one more all star year outta Konerko = good protection) and with that 8th spot keep Hanson. That solves all your problems.

Interesting. I do have my reservations about Werth - the new lineup, the ballpark (in which he actually has a .960 OPS over 25 games) and the impact of the contract (tries too hard to live up to it - especially if he gets into a funk, or gets lazy).

However, I'm thinking 'when in doubt, go with power'. Based on projections, Werth instead of Rios is giving up 10 SBs for 10 HR and a few extra R and RBI. Rios' inconsistency is scary and I don't think I'm willing to use a keeper spot on that much hope.

Avg. of various projections:
Werth: 90 R 29 HR 95 RBI 17 SB .275 AVG

Rios: 85 R 19 HR 86 RBI 29 SB .279 AVG

What They're Saying: Yahoo: #18 Outfielder & #66 Overall; CBS Sportsline: #16 Outfielder; Tristan Cockcroft of ESPN.com: #52 Overall; John Halpin of Fox Sports: #24 Overall; RotoChamp: #64 Overall

Dumping Rios is correct here - he has only really produced at an elite level for the first half of last year - he was pretty hopeless in 2009, and fell off a lot towards the end of last year.
