League Schedule???

Postby jonboycubs » Sat Feb 26, 2011 3:27 pm

This is my second year as a commish. Last year I just did a 6 team league to get a feel for things. This year I have expanded to 16 teams and things are going well except when it comes to me trying to put a good schedule together. There are 4 divisons so 4 teams per division. If I just use the espn default schedule it has us playing our division rivals twice all at the beginning of the year and every other team once for the rest of the year. I would like to balance out the division matchups throughout the year. Say week 1, 5, 10, 15, 19, and 20. And the rest of the teams not in a division played once in the other weeks. I am sure I am making this harder than it should be, but if anyone could give me a helping hand or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. I sat down to do it and I think my dumb self let myself get to easily confused. Thanks for the advice! Hope I have made sense

16 teams
4 divisions
4 teams in a division
20 weeks in the regular season

North
1,2,3,4
South
A,B,C,D
East
5,6,7,8
West

Here is a 16 team 4 division schedule I use on ESPN. It allows you to play each team in your division 3 times and the other teams 1 time.

Weeks 1-7
1=A 6=1 1=G D=1 1=2 3=1 1=4
2=B 7=2 2=H A=2 3=4 4=2 2=3
3=C 8=3 3=E B=3 A=B C=A A=D
4=D 5=4 4=F C=4 C=D D=B B=C
5=E F=A A=7 H=5 5=6 7=5 5=8
6=F G=B B=8 E=6 7=8 8=6 6=7
7=G H=C C=5 F=7 E=F G=E E=H
8=H E=D D=6 G=8 G=H H=F F=G

Weeks 8-14
1=5 F=1 1=C 8=1 2=1 1=3 4=1
2=6 G=2 2=D 5=2 4=3 2=4 3=2
3=7 H=3 3=A 6=3 B=A A=C D=A
4=8 E=4 4=B 7=4 D=C B=D C=B
A=E 6=A 5=G H=A 6=5 5=7 8=5
B=F 7=B 6=H E=B 8=7 6=8 7=6
C=G 8=C 7=E F=C F=E E=G H=E
D=H 5=D 8=F G=D H=G F=H G=F

Weeks 9-21
1=E B=1 1=7 H=1 1=2 3=1 1=4
2=F C=2 2=8 E=2 3=4 4=2 2=3
3=G D=3 3=5 F=3 A=B C=A A=D
4=H A=4 4=6 G=4 C=D D=B B=C
A=5 F=5 A=G 8=A 5=6 7=5 5=8
B=6 G=6 B=H 5=B 7=8 8=6 6=7
C=7 H=7 C=E 6=C E=F G=E E=H
D=8 E=8 D=F 7=D G=H H=F F=G

16 teams
4 divisions
4 teams in a division
20 weeks in the regular season

If you want to play your own division 3 times the other 12 teams once, that is 21 weeks. 20 weeks will not make a good schedule. You would still have three weeks for playoffs. Set your schedule for 21 weeks and ESPN should make you a good schedule. There is one thing that you might have to alter. I noticed that ESPN puts the first six weeks as division games. You might want to put the division games at the end of your schedule.
