Changing Keepers

My commissioner wants to allow one team to change its keepers in the light of Adam Wainwright's pending injury. Keeper were originally due Feb 1st and our draft is March 22. There has been a prospect draft already.

I would say Foul. Why just this one guy and not other owners?

Foul. Once the keeper date is past the keepers should not be changed unless a new owner takes over the team before the draft date.

If there is a penalty for keeping a player from year to year (increase in $ contract or change in draft pick lost) that should be waived for players who are injured before the draft and cannot play any games this season, however, it should be reinstated for next season.

What really needs to happen is that you should push your keeper date closer to your draft. There's really no good reason for early keeper deadlines.

Agree with the above. Turning in Keepers in February just makes no sense. That is like a MLB manager setting his starting lineup before Spring Training. I have heard of leagues having their Keepers turned in just before they start the Draft. That is a bit late I think. We turn ours in a week before the season starts which is also about a week before our Draft.

I'd think it would be fair for that owner to ask the other owners in the league whether they'd mind if he replaced Wainwright, but those answers should be submitted to the commish, and if any other owners object, then he should need to live with it. Normally my league is pretty laid back about such things, and in a case like this most owners would probably say, "Well, the keeper date is arbitrary, and set early for logistical reasons. No harm in letting him fix this." But you also mention that a prospect draft has taken place since that date. I'm not sure how your league works, but if these things interact with each other at all (like if the guy now wants to protect somebody who was selected in this prospect draft), then I'd personally vote no. Can't put that toothpaste back in the tube. Sorta like the NBA notion of a correctable error heh

What kind of advantage does that manager gain by taking a "lesser" Keeper?

While I understand that it may mildly affect the prospect draft, I don't see the "unfair" advantage. One player does not impact a "prospect draft" at all.

The only question is how "severe" an injury should be allowed. -60-day DL? Starting the season on the DL? I'd suggest that Wainwright's injury should allow for a substitution.

My League allows for a substitution up-and-until two weeks before opening day.

We are currently debating if substitutions are allowable after the March 14th Deadline.

Six-of-twelve knowledgeable, ten-year veterans have allowed for it and we're only debating the DL veracity and length. I'm of the opinion that if a player starts the season on the DL, you are at No Advantage by choosing a "lesser" Keeper.

If you can "substitute" after a deadline, why have the deadline at all? A big part of having a set date is that everyone plays their cards at once. If I can see who everyone else is keeping, then go back and re-shuffle based on who I now know will be draft-able, you've defeated the purpose.

We allow changing a keeper due to a catastrophic injury such as wainwrights. What fun is a league where you screwed before you even get to the draft? (We have to declare our keepers 2 days before the draft).
