Soria Doesn't Like 'Mexecutioner'; Has Better Suggestion

Postby StlSluggers » Wed Feb 23, 2011 6:17 pm

The Royals pitcher said that "The Mexicutioner" has a negative connotation and is a particularly jarring choice given the drug violence racking his homeland. He is from Monclova in the northern state of Coahuila.

"It's been really bad in Mexico right now," Soria said Wednesday. "There are a lot of guns in Mexico. It's out of control right now.
...
The nickname originated in 2008, when Soria saved 42 games and "The Mexicutioner" T-shirts were sold in Kansas City. Soria did not shy away from the nickname in the beginning, but with the increased violence in Mexico, he wants to shed it this season.
...
Soria pointed out that Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman, two of the best closers in history, have no nicknames. He said he has no preference for a new nickname. "His Mexcellency" was one suggestion.

I started off upset that he wanted to dump one of the single best nicknames in the biz, but his suggestion is still pretty darn good. :-b

As bad as things are south of the border and as much as I understand and want to respect his wishes, chances are I will always think of him as the Mexicutioner. But I do I like the nickname Mexual Chocolate.

I agree with Soria, mainly because it wasn't an original nickname. Manny Pacquiao was dubbed the Mexicutioner first because of not having ever lost a fight to a mexican. When I started reading the article, I actually thought he was referring to that fact.

Soria and Pacquiao both stole 'Mexicutioner' from a guy that used to use that name in the Original Toughman fighting events in the early 2000's.

He probably stole it from somebody else. You know how them Mexicutioners are.

Only room for one Mexicutioner in baseball, I guess.

He got the nickname because he was undefeated against Mexican fighters, IIRC.
