according to @joestrauss (cards beat writer) waino returns to STL to have right elbow examined. GM Mo describes prognosis as "not encouraging" and club anticipates an extended absence.
According to rotoworld, Wainwright may need Tommy John surgery...
So, to keep in contention all the Cards will have to do is find another pitcher who throws 230 innings with FIP around 3... No problem.
...Boston papers now and then suffer a sharp flurry of arithmetic on this score; indeed, for Williams to have distributed all his hits so they did nobody else any good would constitute a feat of placement unparalleled in the annals of selfishness. -Updike
Potentially huge, and methinks for the Cards, fatal news.
Might this possibly expedite a mid-season Pujols trade? You'd have to think with Waino possibly out for the season any chance they might have had at making a run is now very unlikely.
From a fantasy perspective I was hoping to nab Lester in the fourth but now he and the cluster of pitchers right after Waino get a nice boost up the rankings.

This, unfortunately, is probably correct. Carpenter can still serve as an ace as long as he remains healthy. The rest of the staff though, is not enough to remain competitive unless Lohse rebounds, Garcia continues to dominate, and someone steps up as the #5 starter. If Berkman is able to play outfield for 500+ ABs (Huuuuge if) then the Cards may have enough hitting with a Pujols/Holliday/Berkman/Rasmus line-up.
Certainly this makes it tougher and now its the Reds/Brewers division to lose.
