Looking to get some keeper advice

Postby bucketosand » Sun Feb 20, 2011 9:41 pm

I'm in an 18-team, standard 5x5 roto, mixed, $260 auction cap league and keepers are due soon. We can keep up to 10, and I'm looking for some advice on who I should keep.

Here's my contenders:

Miguel Montero $2
Jarrod Saltalamacchia $2
Devin Mesoraco $5
Jason Kipnis $5
Adrian Beltre $20
Justin Upton $20
Jacoby Ellsbury $15
Shin-Soo Choo $15

Carlos Beltran $17
Alfonso Soriano $16
Ryan Raburn $10
Nyjer Morgan $5
Lorenzo Cain $5
Cliff Lee $15
Jeff Niemann $11
David Aardsma $5
Kevin Gregg $8
Jason Hammel $1

The guys in red are under long term contracts, so I have to keep them. So besides those four, I'm thinking about keeping Miguel Montero, Adrian Beltre, Ryan Raburn, Nyjer Morgan, and David Aardsma. That leaves one spot for either one of my near-value guys like Soriano or Beltran, or a young guy like Mesoraco or Kipnis. Saltalamacchia is kinda tempting, Niemann drove me crazy last year, and I just don't think Cain fits my roster real well.

What do you think? Am I on the right track? Should I consider Beltran and/or Soriano? Should I keep Niemann? Is Raburn an ok keeper at $10? Another question is whether to extend Montero to $7 to keep him through 2012 (could also go to $12 through 2013), or just leave him at $2 and have to release him after this year?

Any advice any of you may have is appreciated. Thanks in advance for any responses!

edit: Just added Gregg and Hammel to the contender list.

I'd probably just keep Montero for this year, tho adding 1 more would be an option too
Beltre should earn that, he's going to be much better than what you'll be left with otherwise
Morgans a go, so is Ards. Salty would be tempting is right; since I'm stopping there he could probly be kept too. Pass on the older OF'ers & Rayburn

Miguel Montero $2 - toss him back in the pool after this year
Adrian Beltre $20
Justin Upton $20
Jacoby Ellsbury $15
Shin-Soo Choo $15
Ryan Raburn $10
Nyjer Morgan $5
Cliff Lee $15
David Aardsma $5
Carlos Beltran $17 - with 450 at bats he should be worth $15 at seasons end, he's a maybe

Thanks for the replies...

I could make a move to get Kevin Gregg at 8 bucks...would he beat out someone like Carlos Beltran for one of those last spots?

Also something I've been concerned about...if I keep Upton, Ellsbury, Choo, Raburn, and Morgan, that's all 5 outfield spots filled up. So Beltran or Soriano would have to take up my utility spot already, and I'm not sure heading into the draft like that is the greatest idea.

Just something I've tried to keep in mind, not sure how much that impacts things. Thanks again for the input so far, and again any more advice is surely welcome!

I believe Raburn played 15+ games at 2nd last yr, check you league eligibility to see if he fits.

You're right he played 18 games at second base last year for the Tigers...unfortunately in this league 20 games is the eligibility standard. It'll only take 5 games in-season though for position qualification, so if he moves around a bit he could open up some flexibility.

Also, I hate to keep throwing in names of possibilities, but I do have Jason Hammel $1 to consider also.

Thanks again everyone for the advice.
