What to do in keeper league?

Postby Rascabuches » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:26 pm

I'm in a 10 team league and 15 of the top pitchers are frozen. I'll pick anywhere from 1-7 and i also got Wainwright, Hamilton and Latos on my team as my keepers. Would you draft hitting or pitching in your 1st 4 rounds?

It all depends on your league settings.

If you start 2 SP 2 RP 3 P then I would just go best available hitters.

If you use more pitching than that (my league is weekly head-to head, we start 5 SP & 2 RP so contrary to every book saying you can wait on starting pitching, it's still always nice to have 2,3, even 4 studs on your pitching staff) So if it's weekly 5 SP I would go best available player with my first few picks (hitters or pitchers)

Lay out your scoring, settings & lineup and if I'm on here Imight change my mind ;-D

Okay, yeah just good old roto.

Well...last year in my roto league I zigged when everyone else zagged. I was picking #11 (out of 12) and we all grabbed hitters, then I took my first pitcher at the turnaround figuring I would start a little run. But everyone just kept taking hitters, so when it was my turn again I saw I could snag 2 top pitchers, and so I did. I dominated the pitching, and won enough of the hitting to finish 2 out of 12.

I wiffed on Javier Vazquez (drafted 4th round last year) I hit a homer with Tommy Hanson (9th round) and U Jimenez (10th) So luck is still there with pitching.

I hate to give you such a generic answer. You know all this stuff. But all I'm saying is I think roto is more like real baseball because your pitching staff really is 50% of your stats.

In head-to-head, your guys may pitch like crap one week but still win, then be cy young winners the next week but lose (kind of like fantasy football)

So I bump pitching up in your league for 2 reasons: 1. Start so many and, 2. roto scoring

Even after all the rosters are filled you'll have decent SP avail to add in season. You've got your ace so you don't need to add to it right away. I probably wouldn't take more than 1 pitcher the next 4 tho if the value is there you could take 2.

Draft bats with your first four or so picks. You got an ace and an ace in the making. Pitching is deep, so you'll find plenty of options to compliment Wainwright and Latos.

Its a tough draft this year lots of top players frozen Cargo, Tulo, Verlander,Longoria,Kershaw, Lester, Pedroia, Greinke, Price, Zimmerman, JJohnson, Lincecum, Posey and a few more. Just very hard to pick and i think 1st base is deep this year.

In a standard 5x5 with your keepers you should definitely be drafting bats with your first few picks. You shouldn't ignore a SP if he's very good value but i wouldn't be looking to draft any till a bit later.
