Pujols or Hanley?

Postby JohnnyRebJays » Sat Feb 12, 2011 4:11 pm

Just curious - I've got the first pick in a new 20-team league (standard cats 5X5)
Given my next pick won't be till #40, is there some logic in taking Hanley at the weak SS position over The Prince Pujols? First base is pretty deep?
Thanks for you opinions guys

Pujols for me. Even more so with 20 teams.

I probably would take Hanley, and this comes from a big Pujols fan. Locking up a SS will be beneficial in the long run.

Pujols for me too. There are many debates about this around. But Pujols is as safe and as consistent as they come.

If you want to look at things a little differently, and if you want to go 1B/SS in the first two rounds, you could look at it as if you would rather have:
Pujols and Rollins or
Hanley and Dunn/Morneau/Morales

Pujols for me. You are going to have seriously weak spots in a 20 team league no matter what you do. You may as well go for the best player, and thats Pujols. If the 3rd round comes and the best player is another 1B... do it again. There will be lots of teams needing a 1B... and I assume you have a utility spot to put them in anyways. Position scarcity is only a factor for me when I feel I have some control over managing the tiers... and in a 20 team league, I dont think thats possible.

Even though 1b is deeper than SS, if you pass on pujols 1st, and your next pick is 40th, there is going to be several top tier 1b off the board. Pujols would be my pick ---had hanley last year with the 2nd overall pick and he just didnt live up to my expectations. He did have some injuries that caused his drop in production and thats not to say hes not going to have another great season this year but the lineup he's in is pretty awful, so not much production. Pujols is a lock for close to 40 HRs, ~125 RBIs and a ~.320 avg. With a 20-team league theres going to be plenty of guys without a top tier SS, but i just cant pass up pujols with the #1 pick.
