Rank These SPs WHIR

Postby Prooks25 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 7:52 pm

5x5 roto

Haren
Jered Weaver
Grienke
Hamels

I know most will have grienke at one, but if you look at projections and past numbers, it tells another story.

I would have them at ~

Haren ~ if you dont trade him by the all star break then he would fall to number 3 on this list
Greinke ~ I think pitching for the Brew we'll see much better numbers than last season.
Weaver
Hamels

I'm bullish on Weaver. In fact love him this year
I would go
Grienke
Weaver
Haren
Hamels - although Hamels will be pitching against other teams 4 in most cases so that does have tremendous upside in the wins column

What is your order?
you imply past numbers or projections won't have Grienke at 1?

Each pitcher has good traits. Haren has the history. Weaver has the strike outs and up side. Grienke has the move to the nl. And hamels had a nice year last year and should win a ton.

Weaver
Greinke
Hamels

Haren

I wouldn't touch Haren. His 2nd half for the past few years has not been good then add in last season. No can do. The other three are all good and you could rank them any way you want IMO.

Greinke and Weaver
I like Weaver, he lead the AL in Ks and would have been in the hunt for Cy Young had he gotten more wins (he was like Felix Hernandez except Felix was just a lil better)

Hamels
Greinke
Weaver
Haren

I have all four closely ranked. I'd give the edge to Hamels over the rest. He finally corrected the bad luck that plagued him the year or two prior to 2010 and his line was more indicative of his performance. Strikeout rate might take a slight correction, but I also think he's the safer WHIP bet.

Greinke was quite unlucky last season and barring a bit of an adjustment period to the NL, he's a good bet for an ERA in the low 3's, 1.10-1.15 WHIP.

Weaver threw more curveballs and that made him seem less one-dimensional (hence the K rate spike). The BABIP is a bit on the low side again, but I think he finds a work around in getting opposing batters to fly out more often in spite of his flyball tendencies.

Haren was actually better in the second half of the year. September, in particular, he was lights out. The tendency to fold in the second half knocks Haren's ranking a bit. However, I do believe he's criminally underrated this year.
