The TV thread

Postby urbanbreez » Thu Jan 27, 2011 12:09 am

do i go with a lcd, led, plasma, or larger screen rear projection? is 3dtv worth the significant financial leap? does plasma actually burn images and heat the room? has anyone ever tried to mount a flat screen above the fireplace? what if i put a screw through the ventilation shaft and die of co2 poisoning? how would that eulogy go?

questions: i have them.

I have a Sony Bravia 46" LCD and a 60" Pioneer KURO plasma, for about a little over 2.5 years. The Pioneer plasma doesn't have as much burn-in compared to respective 2008 models, but the technology to prevent burn-in for plasma has gotten better the last couple of years.

As far as 3D TV goes, I'm not too keen on them and I don't believe they'll go mainstream, at least within the next few years. For one thing, you need the goggles and for sets that don't require them, you have to stand/sit a certain distance away to get the full 3D effect. Let's say front and center, 8 feet away. Also, if you're prone to motion sickness or eye problems, 3D isn't the way to go.

pretty sure they've all but fixed burn-in on plasmas but i still prefer led or lcd.

i bought a used sony 50 inch rear projection lcd off ebay like 5 or 6 years ago and have never had a single problem with it.

my grandparents just bought a 46 inch led samsung for like $1000 and it looks really good.

Plasma gives you the quality of LED but with the one drawback of glare. If you have a well lit room go LED, if you are in a room that doesn't have too much light save a ton of money by buying plasma. Burn in is not an issue anymore. If you are willing to spend for LED, you should just buy a Pioneer Kuro plasma and get one of the best TVs around. I wouldn't buy LCD, the picture quality and black levels don't even touch even a budget plasma. I wouldn't buy 3d. 3d popularity goes in waves and it seems like this wave is already on the way out.

Don't bother with 3D. it looks like crap. too much jumpiness and double-vision. Although when i was looking at a demo model in Costco they had women's beach volleyball on and the pre-serve views from the receiving side were quite nice.
