I like this statement in regards to your situation. If the past few years have been shaky and now seems the time to strike, then you have to do it to say you did it. Otherwise, it'll always be a wait-and-see game. Harper might consistently help 2-3 years from now, so unless you're willing to wait that long while the other guys (McCann, Howard, Roberts) get older then the choice is practically made for you.
I think it's enough if the other guy wants big young names. You may have to send a current major leaguer that you aren't terribly in love with (Encarnacion or pitcher, etc) to give the other guy a more stat-proven commodity. However, if you can get those guys, as well as that pick, with what you have then I'd say do it.
