The reliever market wasn't exactly breaking the way they hoped. They had to do something to address the pen. What would you have preferred? Given the circumstances I can't think of a lot more guys I'd rather have that were available, minus Soriano of course.
If you discount money i'd rather have alot of guys instead. Balfour, Crain, Wheeler, Rauch and Guerrier would of been better options imo. Bobby Jenks can strike guys out but he gets hit really hard plus he's a head case. I'll take because this team really needs another set-up guy, but they still need someone else for middle relief. Hopefully they'll still sign one of those guys above.
Crain and Guerrier got three year deals. I'm not crazy about giving these guys three years. Rauch can still be had (Balfour will cost a pick) but at what price?
Putz was the #1 reliever available this off-season, including Soriano. He's going to be a huge steal compared to the other guys that went for similar or more money. Jenks is right up there though, and for $6M per season he's not as overpaid as I thought he'd be (was in line for $8.5M+ in arbitration). Just like the Crawford signing, they probably overpaid, but it makes the team better and they can afford it. Would have been much worse if they ended up with Gregg or Guerrier, or something, despite saving a bit of cash. So is it really overpaying? Hard to imagine paying your third best reliever $6M a year but it just shows how good their team is overall. I think the starters leave a little to be desired. They all have the capability, but they also have question marks. Can Beckett get back to his old self? Is Lackey maintaining the decline? Daisuke, too? Can Buchholz maintain what appears to be a huge amount of luck? Lester is the only sure-thing as far as I'm concerned. I can easily see them having an even worse team ERA than last year when they weren't so great either.

Brad Penny? David Wells? Bartolo Colon? They probably hope he lasts longer on the team than any of those guys.

and Red Sox fans can't understand why most people get annoyed with them. Jenks would have been a nice addition to about 28 other teams, and their fan base would have been happy for the addition ... yet here is Sox fan, playing with monopoly money, getting upset because they got the two door Mercedes instead of the four door for Christmas.

David Wells was my favorite, at that point in his career. When you no longer have 90+ gas you have to get creative, and man was it fun to watch. I'll never forget a comment he gave in a post game interview following a road win at Chicago. The reporter wanted to know what Wells thinks when the opposing dugout is yelling at him to throw a fastball. "Well," he replied " that just makes me want to throw it even SLOWER."

We lost David Murphy for Eric Gagne, okay? Excuse me if I have reserves about another plus-sized closer "who was once." Mweir... the green monster.
