Jenks to Red Sox

Postby converge241 » Thu Dec 16, 2010 4:21 pm

Former Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks agreed to a two-year, $12 million with the Red Sox, pending a physical, a source told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Jenks has been told he'll be a set-up man in 2011 and will have a chance to be the closer after Jonathan Papelbon is replaced, the source said.

Jenks became a free agent when he was non-tendered by the White Sox earlier this month

This increases the possibility that Papelbon will be traded either this off-season or during the season.

Jenks actually had a pretty darn good season last year, but was unlucky.

Yanks also kicking tires on former closer..must be ex-closer day ;)

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the Yankees are "exploring" the option of signing Rafael Soriano.

Feinsand says the Yanks have had preliminary discussions with Scott Boras, Soriano's agent. The hard-throwing righty posted a 1.73 ERA and converted 45-of-48 save opportunities for the Rays in 2010 but would obviously be used in a setup role in New York. Yankees GM Brian Cashman is said to be willing to pay Soriano "closer money" to set up Mariano Rivera and then take over after Mo retires. Soriano would surely prefer to close somewhere right away, but he could go where the most money is.

Not officially actually, just reportedly. Especially considering arbitration still has to happen and the Yankees and Red Sox are still making moves.

The reliever market wasn't exactly breaking the way they hoped. They had to do something to address the pen. What would you have preferred? Given the circumstances I can't think of a lot more guys I'd rather have that were available, minus Soriano of course.

If you discount money i'd rather have alot of guys instead. Balfour, Crain, Wheeler, Rauch and Guerrier would of been better options imo. Bobby Jenks can strike guys out but he gets hit really hard plus he's a head case. I'll take because this team really needs another set-up guy, but they still need someone else for middle relief. Hopefully they'll still sign one of those guys above.
