Regardless of how much he's actually earning, people need to stop acting like $10 million isn't a lot of money to say no to whether he's making $100 million or not.

Over the next six years with the Phillies he'll make roughly $135million, say he signs for 9mil the next year bringing his seven year earnings to $144 million. 10million shy of what he'd have made in NY.

We are talking about a 6.9% increase in his income. Is 10million alot, yea, but it is relative whether you like it or not.

Taking into consideration that the 6.9 increase i'm offering has no impact on your standard of living.

Its relative, the guy is set for life and he knows it, and is making 120+ million in Philadelphia. 10million over seven years is nothing to Cliff Lee at this point.

If he plans to retire before earning that 10 million, then it would not matter to him. If Andy Pettitte retires he will be leaving 12 or 13 million dollars on the table. Maybe Lee only intends to pitch 5 years, which is entirely possible.

Well I'm pretty sure the big thing was the guaranteed amount of years. He left 1 year of guaranteed money and 10million dollars on top of it. That isn't "heroic" as they say but it does show character. I wish every pitcher would go with what they love instead of chasing every last dollar.....

I think the interesting thing is that he took the lesser offer in the face of a union that often pressures players to take the larger offer in order to drag upward the salaries of the rest of the league.
